    Hey everyone,

As my post count presents, I'm a newbie on this terrific site which is filled with super knowledgeable and classy, true tifosi's...

I am sure there have been a million thread about 355's and I tried searching but couldn't find any specific answers to my questions so please bear with me.

I am about to pull the trigger on a '98 355 GTS 6spd. the car has 25K mls. on the clock and it has pretty solid service history. The interior is a little worn but I assume this could be expected for a 11 year old car. The body panels are all original except one rear quarter has been painted. Overall the Ferrari specialist in Istanbul rated the car as a 7.5-8/10.
Here is the catch, the car needs the infamous belt change etc. service and possibly some little bits here and there to be perfect.

Could you guys give me some tips to look for or ask for during my second look. What should I look for on these cars?, what should I ask for if done or not ? What sounds or behavior should be alarming during a test drive ? Is there anything specific to 98 cars or GTS cars that I should be aware off ?

Secondly, I will need some info on possible updates to calculate some roughly costs,

Is it possible to install 360 Steering wheel on a 355, if so what would be the cost ?

What is the price for Challenge Rear Grill and Recaro/Sparco seats ? Doesn't have to be official Ferrari product and doesn't need to be carbon shell either..

What is the price for Tubi cat-back Exhaust systems ?

I'm open to any other info, heads up and possible update options..

Sorry for all these newbies questions, thanks in advance !

    Can,

I am not sure the cost of the major service there, but here it is about $8000

I am sure you will get some 355 pro's shortly here telling you to see if the valves/headers and possibly cats have been fixed, as it is a problem on the 355 although I am not sure what year (which is why I said shortly someone here will chime in), I think it is at least $10,000 to fix this but again I am not 100% sure.

You SHOULD get a leakdown and compression test as well.

I will let others respond to the exhaust and other mods you asked about.

    Good luck.

The best advice you can get is the name of a local 355 expert that can preform a PPI on the car for you.

That will answer all your questions.

Service history tells a tail too.

Congrats on finding a 6 spd GTS...they're rare.

As for 360 steering wheel....yes, they can be fitted. Cost? Sorry don't know.

360 Sport Seats can be fitted on a 355 as well. It's been done but most think they are too big/wide for 355's small interior anyways.

Do you know what is the production Month/Year on this car? There is LESS CHANCE of a valve guide issue if car is produced mid-98 or later. However, it's known that some '99 production cars also have suffered from those bronze valve guides. If car is going to need a engine-out major service anyway then valves can be done for not much more $$.

Check headers and cats to see if they've already been replaced. Better yet if they're aftermarket such as Fabspeed headers or Hyperflow cats.

Last but not least, are you sure you want Tubi's...? You might want to check out X-ost or Capristo for their famous F1 scream at 8500rpm :D.

Oh, one more thing...check to see if car has updated fuel line bracket? I know '99 cars have them but not sure about '98 cars. Or just keep a fire extinguisher on board ready.

    Good Luck with purchase.

Thanks a lot guys for all these info, you have all enlightened me.

I did not know that headers and valve guides were a default fault in these cars. I will definitely ask for these parts, if they have been replaced or not. Thanks for thee heads up !

I will try to learn the production month but I must remind you all that this is a Euro Spec car hence exhaust/headers setup might be slightly different for emission purposes than US cars. Are the same issues there on both specs of these cars ?

I'll also check the fuel line bracket as I'm not a fast pit-stop kinda fireman :)

I'll definately have the valves replaced on the major service.
It doesn't have to be CS seats, anything that will give similar lateral support will do. I believe some of you have installed aftermarket seats on a 355, what did you guys go for ?

Any other tips guys ? I'll take the car for a test drive today. Any sounds and reactions I should be aware off ?

    Thanks again..

Good call Wax, that seems to be the case.

Clubber, don't be overcome by emotion, you need to be very careful when buying a Ferrari. Patience will pay off in the long run.

All good advice given above. The PPI is your best friend. Spend the money get get a complete one done including, at least, a compression test. Any issues, have a leak down performed. If your Tech has a borescope have him look down to the cylinders. If they put additives in the gas (e.g., ethanol. MBTE, etc.) in Turkey, have him pull the fuel filter and turn it upside down and bang it onto some paper towels - any black particulate matter comes out and you could have problems with degradation of the fuel pump rubber case/isolators which, in turn, can cause problems with the injectors. Listen to the headers with a stethoscope and check for black soot traces near the sampling bungs. A good PPI will save you $$$ in the long run.

360 Modena Challenge wheel with fit on F355 -cost $750.00 for wheel and $65.00 for the required Hill Engineering adapter (see Daniel at Ricambi).

Challenge Grill is approximately $1800.00 (see Daniel at Ricambi).

    Ricambi Link for F355: http://www.ricambiamerica.com/parts_catalogs.php?M=FE&V=model&I=15

Tubi system approximately $2500.00, but I would go with Capristo.

Leave the seats alone. As previously stated, the F360 sport seats will not fit and aftermarket seats cheapen the interior of a Ferrari.

    Busted :)

I will take this advice and not rush in ! Will look through all my options. That car I mentioned in my original post turned out to be a pretty thrashed example. It was repainted to red from azuro blue. Who would do that to such an incredible color?

Thank you both for those incredibly useful tips and links. I'll make sure all these checks will be performed on all my PPI's.
Tomorrow, I'm going to see a collectors pristine 355 with 5k miles (not for sale ) just to have a comparison as to what a proper unmolested f355 looks sounds and drives like. I think this will give me a better perspective for any future candidates.

About AM seats, the Ferrari Dealer over here said that F355 had OEM racing seats too but it seems they are not very pretty.. But I'll see..
I will definitely go for the Capristo after all those great youtube videos... :D:D

    Thanks again everyone !
