Greetings. I'm new to the forum and have a question for all the experts out there. I have an 84 308qv. Recently when I start her up she only fires on one bank of cylinders. I have to restart several times to get both banks to fire up. I think I may be better off upgarding the 25 year old ignition system instead or trying to reoair it, assuming that is the cause of the problem? What ignition system would all of you recommend? Thanks and love the forum!!

Before you scrap the old system, check the grounds on the digiplex units. They are notoriously bad. Search on this forum for the threads that discuss fixing the grounds. Also, check the ground connections at your battery and at the terminal between the battery and chassis. On these old cars, corrosion on the negative ground at the battery can be severe and drops voltage in the system to the point that things will stop working, like the digiplex units. Clean all that stuff up and then see if you still really have a problem with the ignition system.

IF you end up replacing the ignition system, I went with an Electromotive set up on my '74 308GT4 from Nicks and I LOVE IT!

    FWIW, YMMV

I installed an Electromotive in my '78 308. But I had the digiplex in my '84 Mondial QV, and was having intermittent problems. They all turned out to be due to bad grounds. Once the grounds were cleared up, so were the problems. So yes, YMMV. But before throwing the whole system out, why not look at the easy stuff first. Even if he changes to another system, he's going to have to deal with bad ground issues or the new system won't work right either. I learned that on the 308 and on the Mondial.

I can't figure it out so I'm having it sent to Tim Stanford in Fort lauderdale. He knows these older cars very well. hopefully he gets it sorted out. I just think it may be best to upgrade the ignition instead of putting $$$ into a 25 year old system, unless its something simple. I guess I'll just wait and see.

The "one bank" syndrome is sometimes just a TDC sensor... simple and inexpensive to repair.

Check out this link below. Many F chatters have this set up with excellent results! PM me & I can give you more details.

I also have lots of used OEM ignition parts in stock if you want to patch up your existing system.

If you install a Forza direct coil package, you will have reliability, no moving parts to replace & adjustable accurate timing. We have over 250 Ferrari's with this system running all over the world, it is the BEST!

Hi, do you know if your existing igntion modules are the 805A? If you not sure the model number is on the units which are in the below the floor section in a corner of the trunk. If you decide to change to a modern ignition system and your units are the 805A, I would be intrested in purchasing them if you were inclined to part with them. Lynton from down under

Lynton G'Day, I believe they are the 805A. The car is in the shop now. I'll let you know what the diagnosis is. When I spoke to the mechanic yesterday he suggested it may be better to repair the unit instead of replacing with a new system however no decision has been made yet.
