What would something like that be worth vs repainting the car Matte Black.
(Realizing the repainting the car would be hard on resale value)

That was as pretty cool video with a stunning result... until they put that decal on the hood at the end.

    Thanks for sharing.

$2k-$4k on average US dollars. Cheap way to get a new look for your car. Also protects the original paint. It is like a full clear bra on the car :)

that looks like the same process used for putting on a clear-bra... not sure about artists, very skilled tradesmen.

good wrap is around 4-6 thousand.

I think the idea is great but I do have a few concerns:

    1) what about inside the gas cap door?
    2) inside the engine bay, door jams, door sills, etc.?
    3) what is the life expectancy of the finish?
    4) how durable is it (rock chips, scratches, etc.)?

Anyone with info please chime in....

fascinating to watch; i've always wanted to see them doing that

i wonder how long it lasts and if it actually destroys the paint after x amount of years

My company does wraps, as far as the gas cap, door jams, etc.
The wrap material is usually cut between the gap, on most commercial vehicles with advertising graphics, however on color change wrap with no graphics it may be done in separate panels with more overlap into the edges such as the door jams to hide the original color of the vehicle. For us it will depend on the customers budget, if they want more overlap.

gas caps and air vents or behind door handles, they are another story...
the wrap material does not wrap well into areas like the gas cap or recessed vents, etc.

wrap material, does no shrink around the body like most people think.
you can just heat it up and try and stretch it into a vent or gas cap area.
If you stretch the wrap material to much, the adhesive will fail prematurely, and the material will start peeling.

for the recessed area, we wrap them first, trim in close, and then wrap the main body panel and trim a small overlap into the recessed area.

wraps are not as seamless as you may think, there are limitations of what you can do with the material. An inexperienced installer, may stretch the material too much , it will look good when you pick it up, but over time the material will want to shrink back close to its original shape, and the wrap will fail

you can expect 3-5 years on most wraps, when using quality materials, much longer if stored indoors, and it does protect the paint very well, install time range between 15-30 hours, depending on the complexity of the vehicle, and how many installers are on the vehicle. Most material can be easily removed up to 5 years .

we have just started getting requests for matte finishes,
and we have been testing a couple of materials from 2 manufactures.
install is a little more difficult , over stretching matte material causes it to shine like a gloss

Here is our wrap page, you can see the scion started out as silver,
it is completely wrap including roof, you can't see in the pictures, but there is a water droplet pattern on the whole vehicle.

It was one of the hottest things at the SEMA show this year, 3M had some amazing things going on this year with Carbon finishes at the show, I am just waiting for some samples to work with. Looks like we are going to get into it in the NW. Apparently it is being used in NASCAR according to people at the show, it seems very durable. The lady at the 3m booth was doing the rear deck lid of a Pontiac Solstice & she took the wrap material & crumpled it all up it, looked like she destroyed it & then her assistant took a heat gun to it & it became pretty much flat & wrinkle free again, it was pretty cool!

Very artistic work... impressive material and workmanship; however:
    - How easily can you peel it off to see the original paint? long term & short term
    - also, when they are passing this cutter in the gaps, hmmm,... i would not trust that they won't scratch the original paint for long distances like the hood gap
    - What is the advantage? you have limited choices with a given interior anyways, and if you have your car in a given color it is because you like this color, why change? if necessary i would replace my car with a new one of different color... opening a black door to see a red all around the seams is not classy!

my opinion: 600 $ , ok to play for few months, for 6000$ is not worth it.
