I'm shopping for a 348 or a 355 and was wondering did the 348's stay the same through out the model years or is there a better year model to look for and why? Thanks for the help and if you know of any 348's or 355 under $40k shoot me a email: [email protected]

I've been shopping a lot, and from what I've seen, the main differences are the wider rear track, a free-er exhaust, stronger gearboxes, and single disc clutches (earlier cars had dual discs). I may be mistaken, but I think some of the improvements started with model year '92? Or maybe introduced in '92 on model year '93. Not quite sure about that. I know someone here knows the answer to that :)

94 has 15 to 20 more HP because of exhaust and other minor changes.

94 wider track rear makes for less twitchyness at speed

    94 spider was available

The later cars had improvements. The track was not wider, just different rear wheels that had a different offset to increase the rear stance. Later cars have a better alternator and seem to have fewer electrical problems. The Serie Speciale and Spiders have painted lower panels for a more modern look as well as the sport single can exhaust that added about 18 more HP and dropped some wieght. If you want the best in the 348 series, then 1993 to 1995 would have all the improvements. Do a search for 348 buying guide. Lots of info out there. Too much for me to list.

Also, there are 348s and 355s available for under $40K. However, they surely will NOT be a nice example.

Very true but you also have to remember that a lot of 348 owners have done the Speciale paint on the lowers to give their car a more updated look. Also most owners have updated to performance exhaust systems and free flow cats thus adding a few more ponies. A good few have also added after market wheels that correct the offset issues.
I just bring this up because it's important to remember that some earlier cars have a lot of the updates++ that seem to make the later ones more desirable.

Also of note...earlier models were Motronic 2.5, later ones 2.7. Also a taller 1st gear in SS and Spider versions

Offset change was accomlished by ~30mm thickness added to the wheel hub making longer bolts necessary. The increase in unsprung weight made the wheels silly heavy as opposed to just heavy.

The spiders have a wider rear track of 1582 or 62.3 in compared to 1578 or 62.1 in. 92 or 93 they went from Bosch 2.5 to 2.7 ignition system . 93 spiders have 320hp compared to early 348s of 300hp. Track info from Ferrari Spider Sales pamplets.

Some of the late '94 348s have smog pumps. The rear bearings and half shafts are different than the early models, same as early 355's. Some of the secondary air injection pluming is different. Certain models have different gearing ratios. Some use different size fuel filters. Some of the later 348's use the same throw out bearing as early 355's. Front wheel bearings are different. The battery location is different.

That's all I can come up with off the top of my head.

1995 Spiders have the smog pump in the dirver's side rear corner. Spiders have all the cool SS stuff except for the seats and lower chin spoiler. US spec cars ahve 312 gross HP due to the single can exhaust. Euro cars have 320 for the H engines with their slightly higher compression and red line.
