So as some of you may know I live and work in Canada's arctic, Yellowknife, NWT. I work for an airline up here by the name of Buffalo Airways where I manage the avionics shop. What's cool about this particular airline that I work for is that we don't fly Boeing or Airbus products. Hell, we barely even turbine aircraft. The backbone of our fleet is the Douglas DC-3, a WWII, era piston powered unpressurized freighter. Several of the DC-3's in our fleet dropped troops over Normandy. We also operate the Douglas DC-4 and the Curtis C-46 Commando.

I bring all of this up as about three months ago shooting wrapped on a 13 episode reality tv series about Buffalo Airways entitled: "Ice Pilots: NWT". The series follows our airplanes around Canada's arctic and even to Turkey, (there might even be some of the Alaska trip in there, I'm not sure). Think "Ice Road Truckers" but with WWII era airplanes that are always requiring maintenance.

Anyways, the first episode aired last night and while my expectations going in were low, I was pleasantly surprised by the outcome. I also had an unexpected feeling of intense pride watching "my" airplanes on screen.

So anyways enough rambling: The show is currently airing only on history channel Canada on Wednesday nights at 10pm eastern following "ice Road Truckers". HOWEVER canuck fchatters that want to catch the first episode or Americans can hit the history channel website to watch it in full here: http://www.history.ca/video/default.aspx. Just click on "Ice Pilots: NWT"

Oh, yeah and Scott Blue is a Tifosi

To the ever-so-vigilant Fchat police: yes, it's a plug and yes I cross-posted in aviator chat but I do NOT profit directly in any way. I'm simply proud of "my" airplanes and the company I work for and wish to show them off.

very cool David, I will have to watch. I see Buffalo mentioned all the time in Warbirds magazine, over the years you have had quite a few historical planes still working hard. which models do you currently have in service?

yes, they are doing a IP scan, you can't watch from outside Canada. Any ideas David how we could watch? Maybe an IP spoof using Canadian IP would work?

This has me bummed. :( I had an american friend check it out for me before I posted the link so that this wouldn't happen. The best thing I can suggest is to route your traffic through a Canadian proxy server to view the show (theres a decent list here: http://www.publicproxyservers.com/proxy/list_country1.html). Short and sweet instructions for the non-technically inclined:

    1. Copy the link to the history channel canada website to your clipboard: http://www.history.ca/video/default.aspx
    2. Go here and choose a link from canada (shouldn't matter which)
    3. Paste the history channel address into the address bar on the second link and go watch the show!
    4. Proxy servers can be a little finicky, so you may have to try a couple before you find one that works :(

Currently we are still operating the Douglus DC-3, 4, the Curtis C-46 Commando, 1 Cessena 182, 4 Bombardier CL-215 water bombers, a Norseman, 2 L-188 Electras, a couple King Air A90's and a bunch of travelairs/barons.

Needless to say it's a VERY interesting fleet to work on, especially since at least two of our DC-3's dropped troops over Normandy. It's also a very interestingculture here, it's one that I've never seen anywhere else, and it's full of characters. Some of the stories I've heard range from the hilarious to the downright terrifying. I love this place and couldn't imagine working anywhere else. In some ways we're the only "true" bush operation left.....

Enjoyed the episode last night, I wasn't expecting the young girl to make an appearance but I don't want to spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen it yet. The girlfriend wanted to watch something else so I had to sell her on Ice Pilots and there I was saying how it's about a Northern airline flying old planes and how it must be one tough physical job in a harsh climate and then she shows up.

As for changing that tire in those weather conditions with a jack thats not ideal for the job, I got cold just watching it!

Heh, I haven't seen the episode yet (I don't actually have a tv) as history channel hasn't put up the episode on the website yet......

I can say though that the from what coworkers are saying is that the Audrey/Jeremy thing was definitly played up in editing. Audrey is not what she seems she is.....

And James: I'm not on the show this season, I was extremly concerned about signing a film release and losing control of my image in the editing process so I elected not to be on camera. I have however seen myself in the far background of some shots with my face blurred :p

The camera crew started shooting season 2 in earnest on Monday and I am still not sure if I'm going to be involved on camera this year or not. I'll be sure to let you guys know if I am :p

Glad to hear there will be a season 2 :)

As for the editing of the actual shows I've seen so far, all I can really comment is I hope it doesn't end up about each flight having mechanical issues and it being hyped up way too much as if you expect a crash after the commercial ends. In that case I can watch Mayday.

I have learned a few things which is a plus. David have fun deciding b/w being on the camera or not

Rob, Omni film is actively trying to sell it in the States as we speak. Frankly it's not a question of IF it airs but when. The show won the night for at least the first 3 weeks for cable networks up here, and was a highly ranked show on all networks....

We also CRUSHED Ice Road Truckers.

If you can't go through a proxy to watch it on the history channel website, then it should air next season down there....and it'll be HUGE if the "ice road truckers" phenomenon is any indication.

I am looking forward to seeing this as soon as I can. I love airplanes and anything flying related; knowing someone on a show is just an added plus in my viewpoint. Anyone out there able to get it via DVR? If so, we can tell you how to host it as a torrent.

Unfortunatly due to the cost of internet up here, it's EXTREMELY expensive for me to seed torrents on my own.

I got my hands on copies of the 4 aired episodes, and can put out a torrent but I'd REALLY appreciate someones assistance with seeding to reduce my financial burden seeding :)

If you setup a private torrent, I will download it and post it elsewhere and you won't have to worry about the cost after that one download :p

Just tell me where to go to get the private torrent.

I am getting that now. I will seed all 3 episodes for awhile, until I have like a 10X rating of what I downloaded or 5 days...whichever is longer ;)

I know how expensive internet is up in Canada because I have friends there. If you are the one seeding that, I will let you know when I have finished downloading this so you can disconnect and save yourself money.

My seeding this will not cost me any extra money. The only thing that could be a problem is if Comcast gives me grief for exceeding 250 GB in a month! ;)
