I went to drive my 1982 Mondial this morning only to find out that it suddenly had no reverse gear. The car is driven regularly & only sits for a few days to a week at a time. The shift lever dropped into the reverse position in the usual manner with no problems. However, when I let up on the clutch pedal the car moved forward as if it were in first gear. I pushed the car out of the garage & took it for a 20 mile drive. All other gears worked fine, no problems shifting. Even when everything was up to regular operating temp, it still would not go into reverse. There are no unusal sounds coming from the gear box. Any suggestions or ideas? All are greatly appreciated. (This message is also posted in the 308/328/Mondial section.)

Before you panic, look inside the gate and see if you dropped a coin or something in there that's preventing the lever to go all the way over.

It sounds like some kind of timing problem of the linkage to the gearbox. I don't believe it's a gearbox problem.

Definitely check all the linkages and bushes (blocks) as the others have suggested --- making sure no foreign objects are blocking the gate mechanism is a good idea, too.

If that all checks out okay, then you'll have to start suspecting an internal gearbox fault. Here's why )

Reverse and 1st gears are engaged by the same selector fork in the gearbox, and moving from 1st to reverse is a straight throw (no rotation) for the linkage. This generally means that if the linkage is at fault, you can't select 1st AND reverse ---- conversely, if you can select one, you should be able to select the other as well, so........

    Do this check )

With the car running, select 1st gear, and confirm that it engages the gear (the car goes forward). Then shift into "neutral". Confirm that you are actually in neutral (car sits). If you can do this, proceed to shifting directly from 1st into reverse (obviously, make sure the car is not rolling forward when you try to select reverse !). If 1st gear engages, but reverse does not, you may very well have a problem with 1/R selector fork inside the gearbox ---- only way to tell is to drain the gearbox oil, pull the pan underneath, and have a look inside.

David - The check you described is exactly what I did with the car today, several times, and each time it would not engage reverse. Thank you for your suggestion.
