I have not owned a Ferrari but have been learning through the forum about the pros and cons relative to the different models. My philosophic approach to ownership would be to use it as a weekend car, with possible occasional use during the week, which puts the frequency of driving somewhere between a daily driver and a pure weekender. Which model would be your choice with reliabilty/low cost of maintenance foremost, appreciation be damned?

It's difficult to argue with the F430. It's realiable, not that expensive to maintain (well, as far as Ferrari's go), has great daily driver functions (like good A/C), and certainly has tons of performance for spirited weekend drives.

And, there's plenty of good ones out there in all sorts of colors and combo's. Finding one you like is not difficult.

Based on reliability and low costs alone, I would say an older 308 or 328. From what I know the 360 is also up there in terms of just getting the job done without much fuss, but it largely depends on what you get your jollies off on: Classic feel and involvement or sheer speed...

Go drive a well-sorted 328 and see what you think. And look at it this way: You won't ever feel too bad when you don't drive it, cause all you'll have to do to feel good is walk into the garage and look at it... It's just so gorgeous.

You didn't put a dollar figure down so I say a F430 cab and a 612. Put a $5K retainer down with your local shop and drive your heart out. The added benefit of a good weather car and a poor weather car.

It is tough the argue with the 360. They are simple, reliable, and a ton of fun.

We have 50k miles on ours and it runs like a champ. For an idea of what is like to live with on a daily basis for us, read this:

Best of luck with your search.

I would agree on the 328.

In addition to the classic/manual versus modern/computerized, I think it also depends on how much time you spend over 120 mph. The 360/F430 is going to be much more controllable at those speeds, while a 328 is going to be scarier without driving aids, modern ABS, airbags and aerodynamics. The 328 won't keep you from getting yourself into trouble. Unless you do track days, the F430 will be pretty much sleepwalking during your ownership.

As far as costs, the further depreciation on an F430 would more than pay for a 328 engine rebuild, or two. OTOH, 328s are very old, so if you buy some old dog of a car for $30K you will probably spend a lot of time and money sorting it. F430s are all basically new, and it may be 5-10 years before they start falling apart in an expensive way.

I don't have any experience but I have heard nothing but good things about the 328 and a couple of them with high miles and still running strong.

Of course you would, Bullfighter! So would I.

I don't know what the OP's budget is, but in my opinion, there's no better daily driver among Ferraris than a 308/328.

I would love to use our Mondial t as a daily: 300hp, lots of leg room, upright driving position, tons of storage, back seats, power steering, ice cold air, adjustable ride, and 15-20mpg.
I am convinced that the more you drive these cars the less you will spend on maintenance.
