Best multi-media player for your hi-def TV out there. It can play almost all digital formats, be it on FAT32 formated external hard drive, memory cards, flash drives etc. It's a good upscaler for DVD, music jukebox, photo sharing... oh, and it plays games.

The latest models aren't backward compatible with PS2 games and "best multi-media player" isn't really a selling point to a real gamer. :p

I'd check to see what systems all his friends have. The best part of gaming is playing with friends.

Originally, I got into PS because of the Gran Turismo series. I got a PS3 because BluRay was already integrated, and there is no charge for online play. I have the model w/ backwards compatibility, but as was mentioned, it's no longer a part of the new models.

There are good bundle packages with Uncharted 2 going. Uncharted 1 was one of the best games I've played, and I hear 2 is just as good if not better.

Ultimately, like Speedcore advised, if his friends have PS3's it is a great option. There are some pretty fun $10 games you can play online against each other.

Actually I ment to get a Xbox360 :p haha.

Those original PS3 with hardware PS2 chips still demand a premium on ebay.

I don't get why people who buy systems themselves don't just get all the systems they want?

My first gaming system was a NES; gifted for Christmas I think. Later, I was also given a Gameboy. They first system I bought was a SNES with hard earned mowing money. Before long, I passed on the Playstation, and Sega Saturn and waited for the N64... maybe a mistake, maybe not; as the Nintendo was far cheaper. After that, I didn't get a new system since PC's were the best gaming platform for a while.

Than, came my Xbox, and my Gamecube, and later with GT4 I got a PS2. Now I have the 360, and PS3 with no intention of getting a Wii. Seeing as the next gen systems wont be pushed until late 2011, I'm pretty content with all that ;)

That said, I'm only a casual gamer now. I buy 1-3 games/ year, and hate the hardcore online gaming community.

ha, totally skipped over that bit.

yeah, there are good games on PS3, I think xbox is more well known for the variety of games; and wii is ... less variety, but more aimed at a younger demographic.

I bought one last year for that very reason, problem is even with various patches & updates it will not run some of my PS2 game collection.

If I had to pick one current generation console it'd be the Xbox 360. It really depends what games your son wants though.

Depends on what games your son likes. I'd get a PS3 because it's got better RPGS and some fantastic games like MGS4, GT5 and is the superior console when comparing technical specifications.

That being said, I think the Xbox 360 has better online support and multiplayer games.

I bought a PS3 a few months ago as a backup system cause my xbox has been sent back 5 times now. The PS3 is a great system. I like the 360 a bit better for the online community. The PS3 does have blue ray so that's deffinatly a plus. There are a lot of great game plus great prices on used games. I would have to say that you really can't go wrong buy him a PS3. I do have a Wii but it has been collecting dust.

Very cool! Hope to see you both on the game when GT5 has custom game rooms. :) I'm sure he'll be very happy with this!
