Will the 911 ever have a V8?

They say the current engine can't be modified much more, so a mid placed v-8 might be next.

 

I think they may go the route of mid-mount engine before they go v-8. They've seen how well it performs in the GT and Cayman.

 

IMO, if the engine isn't a 6, and isn't in the wrong place...then it's not a 911.

 

The new 997 Turbo does 0-60 in something like 3.4 seconds. That's already Enzo territory.

What needs fixing?

Judging by the aftermarket for Porsche 911 Turbo models, there's always room for more.

 

I think the answer lies in the future of vehicle architecture. If we keep on the path of bigger, heavier, and more complex, yes a V8 will be necessary for the 911 to retain it's performance credentials. If we move towards smaller, lighter, and more simplistic smaller engines (ie the existing flat six) will suffice.

 

The flat six has always been a staple of the 911s. The reason why Porsche like the flat design vs a straight or a v is the space it saves and the lower point of gravity. It's part of the reason why the car handles so well. Larger displacement and more forced induction yes, but I dont think a V8 is in the near future. A different engine would radically change the 911 and its heritage. I wonder if they could design a flat 8? That to me seems more likely than a V.

My 997TT has insane power and its 100% stock. Aftermarket kits will kick that to 650HP or more. A V8 just adds unnecessary weight.

 

imo, the 911 silhouette will never have a v-8, as the flat 6 is the hallmark of that model. while it is pretty much at it's limits, i think porsche will continue to develop it to be more efficient while obtaining the power required.

if they go with a v8 sports car:

- it would be probaly back in the lines of the 928 as they already have those platforms developed... but it would more fit the grand touring niche

- they mo go more extreme and produce a v8 version of an updated CGT type car, but the deveoplment cost may be prohibitive in the the new era of Porsche.

 

get rid of the back seat and stick that motor in the middle!

 

There's still room left in the flat six. 4.0L versions are already on the horizon and will probably make it into production cars in the near future.

What would be the point? It's not like the flat-6 is down on power. And if the objective is to make a 'better' car (in terms of vehicle dynamics) a move to mid-engine (as Porsche has done in a number of their GT race cars) is the logical next step. Add in the fact that Porsche already has a predilection for making lightweight models, and I think that these are more likely the future of Porsche than a V-8 911.

But, hey, what do I know, I actually liked the looks of the 924.

I hope not, although they're on 3.8 litres on the flat 6 now so I'd assume they'd go to 4.0 litres on the flat 6 and then maybe go to an 8 cylinder but I like the noise for the flat 6.

 

I think Porsche will always keep them 6. It is a classic part of the 911.

Also, when I consider the power that these cars produce, it really makes me appreciate the engineering as it is only a 6.

I think they may raise the liters a bit, but other then that, the cars will just grow with the technology.

Actually, Porsche says it's 3.2 (with PDK and Chrono), and Porsche is known for being modest with their figures, so it's probably even better and so it probably can beat the Enzo to 60. Amazing piece of engineering and great value (relative) .

I doubt they will ever put a v8 in the 911. it wouldn't be a 911 if they did.

I've got it on good authority that the first FLAT 8 will be in a GT3, or GT3 RS.

The question is what model generation... 999, or 998?

I have no problem with a flat 8 911. as I said earlier, with cars getting bigger/heavier (and the Cayman so close in performance), I think it's necessary.

 

A friend with close ties to Stutgart
