    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hey Guy's since I know there's really no place better to ask then f-chat I figured i'll try here first.

I just got home from the doctor's and went to check my email(usually about 20-30 every hour) and was reading one when all of a sudden the screen when PINK and had crazy lines all over it and made the few windows I had open supersized and it was VERY slow to respond to closing them, sending mail etc.,

It said for me to restart to renew my setting back to normal and though it might be a virus so just turned it off.

Now when I go to restart it the 'windows XP' screen shows up although the colours are all screwed up and then just goes black, nothing else just black. I can't see or do anything.
I tried once before it went all black and it went all gray, but not the whole screen about 80% and it left a gap of about 1 inch all the way around the screen of black.

I do have Norton Anti-virus(2008 or 09) but it is expired, however I do perform weekly scans and am usually finding one corrupted file.

I am certainly no expert and don't pretend to know what i'm really talking about above this point.
My website guy who used to work for I.B.M suggested I start it in safe mode and if the screens not blank, delete the latest programs i've installed and go from there.

    Any other suggestions?
How do I start it in 'safe mode' thats when it's loading up and I have to press f8 or something right?

I have already posted this word for word in the 'technology toys' thread but have the feeling it wouldn't get noticed for a while there.

    thanks in advance!!!!
    James Simpson

EDIT: just started it in 'safe mode with networking' and although its working the screen now has green lines running vertically about 2cm's apart all the way across the screen!

Going to un-install the div-x update I recentley installed as its the only thing that was installed by me within the last year.

I have noticed that in safe-mode my computer is twice as fast as normal!

Sorry one more thing, I should mention that this computer is ALWAYS on, as in hibernating or showing a slide-show screen saver. It maybe goes off once a month or two.

Sounds like something is fried. Either the cpu, or your video card. Almost positive.

Edit: and if your computer is always on and never off, then there is a good chance it could have over heated, in which case, say byebye to your cpu.

I'm not really too concerned about the actual laptop itself as I bought it for a 'steal' a couple years ago and even then it was a couple years old.
I have all of my clients contact info as well as pictures of hundreds and hundreds of cars as well as personal photo's but everything other then that I don't care about.
I guess it's time for geek squad or someone else like that.
I bought a brand new laptop last winter or so with the intention of having my work email set up on it, but just never got around to it, I guess its a good thing I bought this one when I had the money to burn....

    thanks!

If you have a Windows CD (Operating system), see if you can boot off it and just repair the operating system. It could be something in the operating system is screwed up. If the CPU or harddrive failed, I doubt you would see anything but a blue screen with a statement that the system shut down to protect itself.

Trash the hardware other than the hard drive if you want, mount the hard drive in a new/faster computer and move on. Might want to get a NAS drive for the heck of it, always have backups of your data via mirroring and all that.

Bad video card. Your data is still intact on the hard drive. Take the hard drive out and buy a USB enclosure for a 2.5" drive to put it into. Make sure the enclosure has the right connector for your drive; either IDE or SATA. Plug the enclosure with your old drive into the USB of a working computer and from there you can pull or read the needed data to the working computer. You can then use the old hard drive as an extra storage or backup unit for your data (documents, data, music, porn, etc).

If you can hook it up to and external monitor and that works, bad screen. If that doesn't work, bad video card. If your computer has a a gpu hard wired to the motherboard, a new MB is in order. Ask me how I know? Had a Dell XPS M1730 that developed this very problem. After having the MB, video card and screen replaced, problem came back so Dell replaced the computer.

Bring your system up in Safe Mode. Right click on my computer and then click on Manage. click on device manager. On the right hand side, click on System Devices. You will see PCI Bus. Right click on PCI Bus and select uninstall. System will seem like it is frozen for a bit. Just let it go. If it is like that for like 20 minutes, do a hard restart. Let the system come up in regular mode.

Sounds like a bad device driver, especially since you can come up in safe mode. By removing the PCI bus, it will force the system to auto-detect all hardware on next login and install drivers.

If this doesn't work, use your Windows XP CD to boot off. Follow the screens like you are going to reinstall the OS. When it gets to the last part before the reinstall there will be a selection for repair. Select that repair.

Once you get your system up, either through repair or what I suggested, click on start, go up to programs, accessories, system tools and click on disk cleanup. select your hard drive (if it asks) and then once it goes through it's process, CHECKMARK EVERYTHING!!! Click on next and let it do it's thing. That will clear out all your temp files and should make your PC run much faster. Think of a disk cleanup as an oil change, but instead of for your car it is for your PC. I would also consider doing a disk defragmenting too.

I forgot to mention that in the future, if you have this type of problem, instead of selecting "Safe Mode", try "Last Known Good Configuration". When you select "safe mode", the last known good configuration selection is changed and probably would not work. You might try this anyhow. How long would that attempt take you?

I had an almost similiar issue last week and had to replace my hard drive, $70 and went from 80gb to 160gb. Just re-install your operating system cd and then the drivers cd and last but not least a registered anti-virus. I needed DELLS help but my 'puter is now fine and dandy.

    Good luck,
    tex

How can it be the cpu? That makes no sense what so ever. There could be a problem with the motherboard but the chances are very small.

By the sounds of what you are describing it is the video card that is causing a problems. If I were you I would just back up all my important data to a cd or another network, and buy a new laptop. You can get a decent one for $1000 these days. The problem you are describing is not because of a virus.'

If you also have sometime, insert your windows xp into the cdrom and reformat all your drives and install a fresh new windows operating system on your system again. This might rule out a hardware failure.

You could also run a CHKDSK (check disk).

It may not make any sense whatsoever, and frankly, a lot of things don't when it comes to computers, but i've had this issue before, right down to a tee, and It was my cpu that was fried. I don't count anything out anymore when I have a problem, as far fetched as it may be.

My Dell GX270 just **** itself this morning. :(:(

It turns on and powers up, but nothing displays on the screen. :(:(

Its not the monitor, I checked this with my laptop. I opened the comp up and it looks like there is a capacitor leaking/fattend up on the motherboard. Its fatter than the rest and looks like it exploded nearly. :D:D

Because I am a curious ****, I am going to pull it apart and inspect. I may be able to solder another one in there. I dont know if thats the issue, but I will give it a go anyways. It looks like the only thing that is obviously ****ed. :D:D

    Wish me luck. :eek::eek:

Doesn't sound like a bad HD but if it is PM me as I recently sent one out for data recovery to a company that does amazing (and reasonably priced) work in their own clean rooms. This company also does remote off site backup...which may interest you also.

GX270's are notorious for failed motherboards due to blown capacitors, we have a few hundred where I work and many of them have died that way. The capacitor can be replaced but it will be only a matter of time until another blows up.
