All I'm saying is at the US karting championships observers could not detect anything wrong with the neck or him favoring it etc. You'd think that at that level he'd be showing some effects? Or, if it was a problem that'd he'd even be participating? Of course he could be hiding it but between now and next season he should be in top shape again. The guy's 40 but probably will be in better shape then most.

He's got nothing to lose IMO. If he's so-so you just chalk it up to age, the neck, whatever? You can never take away what the guy has already done and that will probably never be surpassed.

"I don't know him personally, but it's clear that we cannot offer him anything: we have two young drivers like Felipe Massa and Fernando Alonso, who we are expecting a lot from next year."

tell me this didn't sting MS with first the rejection, and then the slap on his age.

We might just see a fired-up MS with a lot to prove... He is a FORMIDABLE opponent...

I am not an MS fan either but I tell you one thing. If he does come back and manage to do something meaningful against Hammie, Alonso and the other young guns, I will have no choice but to say he is the best F1 driver ever.

now things are getting more and more real.

But don't forget he was supposed to come back this year it was official and all, and then
    it didn't happen.

So as longs as there is no contract signed, and until I see M.S in the car on the starting grid of the first 2010 race, I won't believe it :D

Seems there was another driver that Ferrari chased off some years ago. Niki somebody. Came back after a few years and did rather well, driving for another team, as I recall. Taught his young teammate a thing or two while he was at it. Alain somebody. Some might say, with good reason, that Niki schooled the professor.

It's a very different game today: drivers have to be far more fit than they did back in the day. Some young driver came in and made everyone look pathetic because he could drive flat-out for 200 miles instead of easing up a bit here and there. Oh, and he could turn qualifying laps all race long without falling off the road. Who was that guy? Shoe something. Won races in cars that were clearly not as fast as his rivals'. As I recall, if this Shoe fellow was within half a second in qualifying, he was a legitimate threat to win the race, and often did. But what the heck, my memory's not what it used to be.

I haven't read the whole thread (sorry) but has anybody mentioned that Luca's persistance for wanting a 3rd FCar for Schumi seems to show that they've known about this for a while and were trying to keep him? Sorry if this has been discussed. :)

Your so right, and i think at top of that list will be Nico Rosberg, who was said to have turned down the seat at McLaren due to not wanting to be team mate of Lewis!! Now look who he might have to race ! ;)

Lately only stupidity is coming from this guy. First he forced Schumacher into retirement, than his dumb idea of trying to make an all italian team ( at least as far as the management is concerned). If he would have hired Brawn to replace Todd as a team manager--the Brawn team would have not existed, Schumacher would have not return to Brawn etc. It was obvious Ross wanted the top spot in Ferrari.
    Now LDM is kicking himself......

Ah yes, I think NR is feeling his oats just a tad early. :):) I think if MS does join MBF1, Niko will see his life change dramatically as a driver. Bad for his ego, yet great for is skill sets.

I am an unabashed MS fan and hope he comes back and does well. The only possible challenge he would have on the grid is FA in semi equal cars.

If Schumi has lost nothing since retiring, and thats a big If, there is no driver that would match him over a whole season in the same machinery . Many of his ex team mates that were big enough to admit it ( Irvine, Massa, Verstappen), have all said he was totaly unbeatable in the same car, and the only way to beat him was in superior equipment.. FA is a massive talent, he is to be respected, and im hoping he does great things with Ferrari, but the fact is, he was matched on the most part by Lewis in his rookie season. It will be very interesting to see how FA and Massa match up. I would not be surprised if Massa puts another World Champ to shame, i guess time will tell..

    Well newbie here! :)
Nice to start with a topic that interests me.
Despite being from Spain -oh well maybe due to that- I am far of being an FA die-hard. I really think Massa can regularly match and/or beat FA.
Felipe was more often that others a match for MS, and that when Felipe had still some to learn and Schumi was (IMHO) still in top form or at last 90%. Massa was at least as good as Kimi. I cannot see FA beating Felip fair and square...

That said, if Ex-Brawn are as strong as last year, MS will certainly have a chance.

So which World "Champ" has he put to shame fo far?.

The only world "Champ" he has ever been in the same team as is Schumacher and I can't recall any putting to shame being dealt out there.
As for World Champions driving for other teams, there are far too many variables for a proper direct comparison when it comes to any putting to shame.

As to all those knocking LDM and the decisions he has made concerning Ferrari, It's easy to run Ferrari when you don't have to do it for real isn't it. There's no pressure on you. Hundreds of people and their families aren't relying on your decisions. You live in a world of " I would have....." hindsight, without having to worry about the effects of your decisions made at the time required.

You don't know the conversations Schumacher had with LDM at the time. For all you know, at the time he may have had his doubts about wanting to keep going for another season, living with all the relentless pressure and media attention all the time, all the constant travelling around the world, the incredibly long hours he used to put in every single day. Maybe, just maybe, he was finally getting tired of it all, after all, he's a man like the rest of us, not superman!.

The biggest conundrum that faces any sportsman is: When is it time to stop?. Sometimes they get it right, sometimes they get it wrong. Sometimes they think they stopped too early and decide to make a come (as it appears with Schumacher now). Sometimes this proves to be a good decision, sometimes it turns out to be a bad decision.

As for all this nonsense that LDM "forced Schumacher to retire!", what did he do, threaten to kill him if he drove in F1 ever again?, I don't think so!. Schumacher is a grown man and if he really didn't want to retire at that time, he could have gone to any other team on the grid and carried on, but he didn't did he?. Now having been away for a couple of years, he's feeling refreshed and wants to see if he made the right decision. Maybe it will work out, maybe it won't, but at least he'll know.

One thing being on this site has taught me though is that if you want to find the best team owners, team managers, drivers, race engineers etc, don't waste your time looking around a race track on race day, because they're all at home on their couches, throwing back a beer and shouting at the TV about where it's all going wrong.

Like I've already said, It's easy when you don't have to do it for real!.

Can't agree more. Kimi's title was more like it was handed to him, rather than him winning it in a convincing way.

    Ferrari boss expects Schumacher comeback
    Fri Dec 18, 7:59 PM
ROME (Reuters) - Michael Schumacher is very likely to make a Formula One comeback with Mercedes next year, according to Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo.

"He phoned me and he told me that there is a very, very, very strong possibility (of racing for Mercedes)," the autosport.com website on Friday quoted Montezemolo as telling reporters at Ferrari's Maranello headquarters.

"Having said that, it is not 100 percent decided. But that is what he said yesterday morning."

The Ferrari website quoted Montezemolo as saying it was more the seven times world champion's "twin brother" who was contemplating a return rather than the man who won five titles in a row for the Italian team.

"The real Schumacher, the one I know, will always remain in the Ferrari family," Montezemolo said.

"Then there's his totally identical twin brother who seems to have the idea in his head to go and race in Formula One with Mercedes.

"I don't know him personally, but it's clear that we cannot offer him anything: we have two young drivers like Felipe Massa and Fernando Alonso, who we are expecting a lot from next year."

The German aborted plans for a comeback with Ferrari this year as a stand-in for injured Brazilian Massa because of fitness concerns but has since been linked strongly to Mercedes.

Mercedes has taken over champions Brawn and Schumacher is being lined up as a replacement for Britain's world champion Jenson Button, who has joined compatriot Lewis Hamilton at McLaren.

    NECK INJURY

Schumacher has worked as a consultant for Ferrari since retiring in 2006 but Montezemolo told Reuters recently that the Italian team would not stand in his way if he decided to race for Mercedes.

The 40-year-old had to abort his planned comeback in August following medical checks on a neck injury sustained in a motorcycle accident which caused him pain during testing.

Autosport said that, according to unnamed sources, Schumacher and Mercedes had agreed a deal in principle but were waiting for medical experts to confirm his neck was fully recovered.

"I think that when I asked him to replace Felipe after that terrible accident in Budapest this summer, the desire to race came back powerfully and not being able to finish what he wanted to do left a great void that we cannot satisfy," Montezemolo said.

"We tried to advance the idea of a third car but for the moment it is not possible. I don't know what his future decision will be but I give my best regards to him, or rather, to his twin."

The Mercedes team are run by Ross Brawn, the former Ferrari and Benetton technical director who helped Schumacher to win all his world titles.

    I doubt it:

    - Non drivers in pitlane will be happy as he is a sponsor and fan magnet bringing back some lost $$$.
    - The young guns will be salivating at the chance to beat the 7 times WDC. Folks like Vettel and Hami.

The only guy who won't like the return will be Rosberg. He'll be just another #2 driver next to MS following team orders.

PS: I can't wait to see KOBAYASHI! do a pass on MS. That'll be too funny. :)

    Nail meets head.

Imagine what's going on in Hamiltons head now, it will be his dream come true.

Thats why IMO it is risky for MS to come back, I hope he does real well but he is the man they ALL will want to beat, like moving target.
