My 9-month old Austalian Shepherd, Buddy, decided to jump off our bed, only to get his leg caught between the mattress and the bed frame. I was downstairs working on my computer only to hear him start crying, very loudly and non-stop. I flew up the stairs only to find him lying on the floor with his leg retracted. It was obvious something was very wrong. We rushed him to the vet, who proceeded to take x-rays. We learned that he fractured his leg. The vet told us he had to refer us to a specialist at Michigan State University. We took him there immediately. He had to have surgery last Tuesday. It went very well, and we picked him up on Wednesday. He is recovering nicely, every day he puts a little more weight on his leg, and for longer amounts of time.

Was so traumatizing to hear him crying like that. So glad he is expected to recover fully. Poor guy, has to wear a cone on his head for a couple of weeks. So far, he has escaped from it a few times - he's a smart little bugger! Also, strange to see him with a quarter of his body shaved.

I am just glad my pup is home, and is getting better. Amazing how much pets are part of the family. The surgery cost $2,500.....certainly didn't need a bill like this right now, but there was no question that is what had to be done.

Really sorry to hear about that Dan. Hope the little guy has a speedy recovery.

I got a call 2 weeks ago from my mom saying my uncles dog had to be put to sleep because of a serious back problem that was $3500 and not 100% sure it would allow him to walk again. I was heart broken over that. I was really looking forward to seeing him at Christmas.

You can't blame him escaping. Nobody likes the 'cone of shame'

Indeed. My dog had to wear it when she got an infection on her left front paw. The cone was a last resort; she had to wear it a couple of years ago and she hates it. She figured out how to stand a certain way and tore her bandage off. I didn't get mad at her though. She just did what is natural for dogs. They really are like members of the family.

We all know those cones serve no real purpose and are just there to embarrass the hell out of your dog! A little payback for the random shoe or sock that got mauled when they were a puppy.

I'm glad Buddy is on the mend. I'm shocked that my 3 kittens have not hung themselves in the blinds or been poisoned from something under the counter in their 1st year. They are into everything. New kids are a constant worry!
Is Buudy an unusual color for the breed? My dad had one that lived to well in her teens but was black & white.

Buddy will grab anything he can get a hold of.

As far as I know, just one of the regular colors of the breed.
