I am about to take the plunge in Jan. on a 2004 Maranello 6 speed.
Of course every guy should own a Ferrari at least once, right?
Before this I have owned a variety of Porsches, done track days, owned a 94 Turbo race car, some AMG Benzes, some Audi S cars, and loved them all. But I also loved their reliability and useability.

So what will be it be like to own this car and put 6000 miles on it per year, drive it most weekends (weather permitting), take it on a couple of trips per year. Basically to use it for pleasure but use it.
What will service be like? Can anyone ballpark a years costs.
I am one of those "everything has got to be perfect" types.
I am located in Westport CT so I would appreciate any shop recommendations. I always had my Porsches serviced at FArnbacherLoles and loved those guys. And many years ago I met Fancois Sicard but have not kept in touch.

I thank you all in advance.

I haven't owned a 575 but I drive my 360 regularly and find it to be eminently comfortable, totally reliable and always a hoot to drive. From everything I've read or heard from 575 owners, it is every bit as trouble free and effortless to drive as my 360 as long as it's properly maintained. I would expect maintenance costs to be similar to the big AMGs, possibly a bit more, and certainly every bit as useable and reliable.

The only problem I see in your scenario is so little driving --- why only 6K miles per year in such a spectacular car? I've observed the more I drive my 360, the better it runs in every way.

I think you'll find the 575 is a great car and I can't see any way you will be disappointed.

I think the 575 is a great car and a modern classic. When we move back to Fl. in the near future I've been thinking , but not out loud yet that maybe it's time to let the 360 go and pick up a 575. It reminds me of a modern Daytona. Post some pictures when you get it and keep us posted as to how you like it.

Thank you so much for the replies. This site seems to be a great community with a lot of positive energy--I hope it transfers over to the car! I will only driving 6k miles per year because i just don't drive that much except on weekends for any reason. I would think we would be out for dinner and visiting, and then a couple of trips per year (MOntreal F1, Kiawah, Vermont, etc.), so there is not really a chance to take two weeks and do a one-lap kind of trip.

Mileage is peanuts for the car. If you drive it regularly she'll reward you with reliability. So far I've done about 18k miles in 2 1/2 years without major issues.

Kudos for choosing a 6-speed - I've got the 550 which has a 6 speed as well, and it really suits the car's concept IMHO.

Coming from Porsches will need some adjusting, and a lot of the V8 Ferrari drivers also take a while to 'get' the Maranellos. It's a high speed beast that has benign handling and is fairly nimble for it's size and weight, but it's a car where you need to be tuned into what she has to tell you. It's subdued and understated, but spectacular if you take the time to listen. EVO magazine described it's party trick: exiting a toll both, short shifting into 6th at 30mph and hauling it to 200mph in 1 gear. Obviously only in Germany... :)

It's also a very easy car to drive, if a bit wide. I've got a rear-view camera in mine, which is really handy. But the throttle is well modulated and you can potter around on just-over-idle through town without any issues.

    Enjoy the ride!

I put 38,000kms on my 550 before I sold it. My 575 HGTC has 22,000kms. Both cars barely run in. As far as I can see, cars are bulletproof

Good time to switch to Ferrari since FL was taken over by the FEDS? There was some kind of corruption issue and the doors have been shuttered.

I see passionate ferrari people or passionate porsche people. Rarely can one guy live with both cars. Usually, the P guys hate the F's and the F guys hate the P's. Each guy will at one time or another by the other car then hate it and go back. So, if you are a P guy save yourself the trouble. I'm an idiot and bought P's twice only to hate them and go back to F's. I am still tempted by P's and my wife says I can buy anything I want except a P because she does not want to hear me complaining and *****ing about it until I ultimately sell it. So maybe you'll get a little chuckle out of my plight. BTW if you have to pick an F a Marri is a best choice.

Can't say I agree with this. I have lived with and been passionate about both for some time now. I'll always have both in the garage. My P-car friends are always more interested in my F-car and many of my F-car friends are interested in the P-cars.

Our own Rob Lay is keeping an eye out for a nice turbo P to add to his stable one day.

They are both brilliant in their own ways. Can't understand how an automotive enthusiast could dislike either. Unless we are talking about the Cayenne. :)

Nice driver for a long haul at speed. Make sure it's been serviced, Belt service is about $2,000.

Why do Ferraris need a "belts done" service when the cars usually have such low mileage? Is it age, the car needs to have a timing belt changed because it is three, four, or five years old?

Other high performance cars I have owned require no major service until 30K or even 60K miles.

On the low mileage cars, they're not driven often so the belts sit on the tensioners in one spot for a long period of time. The belts get brittle, and also the tensioners develop weakness from not being moved. One or the other fails resulting in serious engine damage. The belt services are just insurance against catastrophic engine damage.

NA, as Ferraris are seldom driven to 30K, or *gasp* 60K miles......

yes, yes, I know, there are at least half a dozen Ferrari's that have been driven that many miles.....;-)
