I can tell you this. I was up close and personal with MS at the Super Nats and not only did he look fit as hell he also drove his Tony Kart to 7th out of a starting grid of 40+ beating both Sebastien Buemi and Piquet Jr. who are arguably part of the younger crop of top notch drivers. IMO he certainly held his own and looked as capable as ever!

My schizophrenia is kicking badly already! :)

I will all come down to the cars. For example, if Micheal had been in the 2009 Brawn, he would be easily won the championship, certainly in a more comfortable fashion then Button did i feel.

If Merc produce him a front running car, he might have a very realistic shot at the title. I'm sure there will be some epic battles that Micheal always seems to always attract, as he is a true racer, and never gives up, you just can't count him out.

People like to believe that Alonso out-classed or out-raced Micheal in 2005 / 2006 seasons. But if you look at the facts, its far from the full story.

For 2005 the FIA changed the tire rules, in favor of the Michelin runners, as in the previous years the characteristics of the Michelin tires was very much suited to the "1 set of tires for the race" rule. In 04 and 03, some Michelin cars would often not change there tires during there pitstops. It was understandable, the sport needed a shake up, Michael's long dominance was harming interest in the sport.
Michael drove the hell out of the car in 2005, and was on a completely different level to every other driver on the inferior Bridgestone's..

2006, was a wonderful battle between Alonso and Micheal, but was decided by mechanical failures, certainly not by Alonso driving circles around him, if anything, it was the other way around ( China 06 ?? ).

If Merc build him a fast, adaptable, reliable car like we saw Brawn doing last year, Micheal might have very good shot at extending his own records..

You sound like a MS fan. So whom you're gonna root for next year:

MS in the Merc or our boys in the Ferraris?

It seems like the MS return reaction is kinda blase' this time around. I'm sure going to the competition has a lot to do with it but heck, maybe if the F boss wasn't such an @sshole things would be different? ;)

Don't forget he fooled the whole world with his previous 'comeback' that wasn't. If he pulls that one again with Merc his fan value will fall faster than Tiger's.

He probably would if McEnroe were crazy enough to give a comeback at his age.

It will depend on how good the car is IMO.

A thought MS may want to hold in his memory banks :

Schumacher will be 41 on Jan. 3. His younger rivals might care to note that Juan Fangio did not even race a Grand Prix car until he was 38 years old, won his first world championship two years later, and clinched his fifth title at the age of 46.

    However times do change..

Andreas; let me be the first to publicly say I will pull for Michael over Ferrari. (very weird btw); Michael is only back for 1 year, Ferrari has always been my team, and I hope they do well. But in the battle of Michael, Alonso & Massa, I hope Michael prevails. I would bet alot of people will be conflicted (like me) as to who to root for.
I'm really looking forward to 2010.
Is this going to get me banned????

Actually the Bild article does mention that the contract has been signed in England.

That's a good deal more than Benoit reported. Short of a press release from Merc or MS, that's about as good as it gets.

    Bring on 2010!

I'm a Schumi fan, a Ferrari fan and a racing fan. Not necessarily in that order but I'm not much for total domination.. makes things boring. I'd love to see the Scuderia in top form by placing top equipment and talent on the grid. I'd like to see others putting their "best" forward without hinderance or favor. Hopefully- we'll see good governance and exciting racing.

If Merc, SF (and others) field competive cars, things should be interesting. I think there's plenty of talent on the grid and I don't see Schumi (or any driver) dominating in inferior equipment. Nor do I see Schumi outclassed in equal equipment.

I'll be happy to see SF or MERC running up front as long as it's good close racing.

I would also bet Schumi's younger rivals would sh**t in their pants if they were driving Fangio's era cars!

In fact MS himself would be ****ting his pants if he were to drive Fangio era cars at speed. He once made a statement along those lines.

The BBC has jumped onto reporting it as a done deal:

Still no official announcement from Mercedes GP (Brawn GP) and Schumacher's official spokeswoman isn't commenting, so not sure how much the BBC might be drawing from the Bild reports or other media outlets.

    All the best,
    Andrew.

    Good for Schumi.

So does this deal mean he will go back to Ferrari, or have they lost him forever?

Scary thought if he is lost forever!!!!! They hire Massa in Schumi's place to develop new Fcars and in a few years everyone prefer Lada Samara over Ferrari
