I remember Micheal saying something along the lines of that. He always showed great respect for the skills and dangers of the long gone era's. But to say he would **** himself is a bit much, as Superbikes on the limit are every bit as extreme as 1950's Gp cars.

What people seem to forget about all F1 guys, past and present, is that they are serious thrill seekers and adrenalin junky's. Things that would make us ordinary humans feel fear and uncomfortable are completely normal to them, you just have to look at there heart rates and blood pressures to see that even in high risk situations they are functioning normally.

Well you were 100% right, i'm one of the fans suffering from schizophrenia right now :)

My heart will always follow Ferrari, always has, always will. And im a big fan of the current pairing, so no problems there. Your also correct, i'm also a big Schumi fan, have been since his early races, but became much bigger naturally once he joined a struggling Ferrari, and went on to bring the great days of success back to Marranello after all those years!

So since its looked very likely that he will be making a come-back with Merc, i have had many conflicting thoughts and emotions. One moment i think " it will be great to see the master back" but then i think "damn traitor, how dare he turn his back on the family". So i really don't know what i will feel if he is on the grid for the 1st race, or if he is battling for the champ with Massa or Alonso. But i know for sure, if Ferrari have another poor season, and Schumi is fighting for the champ with the others, he will have my full support, but you will never see me wearing a Schumi-Merc cap in the grandstands, so i guess i willl have to dust of some of the old Schumi - Ferrari caps from glory years !

Have to disagree on this: security in the old time was not as good as today... Getting out of the track often meant death and lots of great drivers lost their life... Nowadays, everybody think they're invincible (crashes at Suzuka last season for example would have killed a few just a few years ago). Motorcycle racing is also much safer with dedicated tracks...

... still no word from Schumacher's website or the Brawn website. When I read (on F Chat) about his possible return with Brawn I had very mixed feelings. I was always a Schumi fan, but my interest in F1 really started when I was invited to attend the last race he had with Benetton. I think my admiration for him really started as a result of him going to a struggling team to resurrect their fortunes. So through that I became a Ferrari fan from 96 onwards. That got me into a Ferrari 308, I have visited the factory a couple times, and have become a staunch Ferrari fan. However, when Michael retired at the end of 2006 I went to Brazil to see the end of an era, and havent had the same life or death attitude to Ferrari's fortunes since then. That is when I realised that I was a Schumi fan first and foremost.

So i will continue to want Ferrari to do well, esp from 2011 onwards, but just for next year I will also want my man Schumi to do evn better, as I have realised I cant ever shout against him.

I look at his return as the farewell season he didnt have in 2006 with the announcement of his retirement being made so late in the season.

Its quite sad that his expertise will be lost to Ferrari.

It'll be interesting to see what the banners read around Monza next year!.

Now he's officially gone, Schumacher no longer has any of My support and I hope he struggles to keep up with Fernando, Felipe and anybody else with a Ferrari engine on board!.

    FORZA FERRARI!.

I share your feelings, but (I hope I am wrong here) I am afraid he is better than all 3 together.

I just saw an interview on the BBC where Michael Schumacher himself said that he's coming back to compete with Mercedes GP.

I'm sorry to see him leave Ferrari but I'm pleased to see him return to Formula 1. The cockpit of the car is where be belongs, not on the pit wall. I'd love to see a return of the Alonso-Schumacher battles, they were great!* Maybe Lewis Hamilton and Vettel will wade into the mix too? It'll be an exciting season - the best for a long time!!! :D

    All the best,
    Andrew.

    * Forza Schumacher!

It's sad to read that there are people like you out there who don't care about the sport. A red car with a horse is the only thing that matters to you obviously. Sad. You sound like a bitter old man.

You should be happy for F1. Michael just saved it from collapsing completely.

Michael to drive for Mercedes GP
Team switch done - a big "thank you" to Ferrari

"I have decided to return to Formula One. Mercedes GP and I agreed on teaming up for the coming 3 seasons. And to be honest, I'm already super excited by the prospect to be back in a F1 cockpit.

I don't want to deny at all that the idea of a German F1 team extremely tempts me. I guess every German driver would feel this way. And of course it plays a major role that I again can work together with Ross at Mercedes GP. Above all, however, my old hunger for racing is back. In Abu Dhabi, when Ross asked me if I could imagine returning to F1, I felt that I wasn't ready for it. But only two weeks later, when he called me once again, I realized that my old passion was returning. Suddenly I was on fire again. For me, the imagination to be back in a F1 car and to compete for the world championships is exciting and extremely inspiring.

That is why my thoughts initially go to Ferrari. I'm very pleased that the split-up goes off that harmoniously and that we are still on friendly terms with each other. I would really like to thank Luca di Montezemolo and the whole Ferrari team big time for the time we spent together and for giving me the opportunity to leave Ferrari in friendship. It's such deeds that make up a true friendship, as even though the contract has not yet been signed, we had promised each other to further cooperate by shaking hands. I will always carry a big part of Ferrari in my heart and I will never forget the sympathy and passion of the 'tifosi'. They supported my all over the world with their devotion - thank you very much for that!

I didn't take this decision lightly at all, especially because of that. Ferrari and I have been working together for 14 years and I've experienced a lot of great moments with the team during this time. Most of my life as a Formula 1 driver is 'red' and so there is strong solidarity and loyalty to these guys who have accompanied me and have always built great cars for me. This solidarity will remain, even though our teams will be competitors on the race track - because I'm certain that Ferrari will regain its former strength since the crew is really strong and committed.

Mercedes GP will be a new challenge for me which is extremely attractive. I have no doubt at all that the team will be really strong. They showed by winning the two world championships that there is meshing a fascinating mixture of high professionalism and deepest passion. The relation between the competence of Mercedes and the current world champion team is extremely attractive and promises a good performance. I think the duels on the race track will be electrifying. Especially since I've got the feeling as if, for me personally, the circle closes after all the years I spent in Formula One. I concluded my first ever driver's contract with Mercedes - back then in Group C and Le Mans - and Mercedes also supported me when entering the F1.

Until recently, I was absolutely sure that I had ended my career as a race driver at Ferrari. But sometimes things change suddenly and unexpectedly. All of a sudden, the framework conditions aren't the same anymore. At that point, you have to reconsider the decisions you've made. And, to tell the truth, the failed comeback attempt last summer gave me reason to reconsider my situation. I was surprised myself how fast and how strong I committed myself to this topic again. Apparently, my batteries recharged completely during the last three years. And when - thanks to Ross - the opportunity arose to drive for Mercedes GP, I realized that my old motivation was back, full of fresh energy and great force.

Physically, I feel absolutely fit. I already realized in summer how fast I achieved my former performance values by exercising specifically. And ever since, I kept on exercising. My neck is absolutely free of complaints. I can now do the same neck work-out as I did when I was still racing. This wasn't possible in summer because back then only five months had passed since my accident and so my neck wasn't cured completely. In the meantime this isn't a problem any more.

I absolutely enjoyed my current life in those three years, doing a lot of things. There were no bored feelings or something like this, I was doing Karting and Biking without big hazzle. Now I am geared up to compete on a serious level again. I know that my change of mind happened rather suddenly and I think it's great that Corinna appreciates my passion and that she absolutely backs me and my decision. When I told her about my plans, she immediately felt that I am serious about it and she instantly gave her approval.

To put it simply: I'm totally fired up for next year!

Thank you for sharing. A very eloquent and diplomatic announcement from MS.

To some of the Tifosi that may be against MS, I think he has earned his way as a member of the family. LdM came out and said there was no room for him at Ferrari since he already had Alonso and Massa... Merc and Ross welcomed him in with open arms. I cannot fault the man for going through the open door when the other was quite publicly closed to him...

MS brought a lot of glory to the Scuderia over the years and the Tifosi have basked in that glory. I think we all owe him a wish for the best.

Brawn + MBz + Schumi...a very formidable combination.

I welcome MS back to the sport.

Still, I will be cheering for the Scuderia.

This could be a very exciting season. Let's hope politics plays a lesser role, and that sportsmanship and competition return to the front.

    Jack.
