I suspect we old farts will get to relive the excitement of the Ferrari vs Mercedes days. Except- we get the added benefit of knowing that if Mercedes prevails, they will have done so with a Ferrari legend at the wheel, and crew behind the wall.

I can't help but think that if Merc prevails with MS at the helm, for all the good LDM brought to Ferrari, he may most remembered as the man who ousted a legend, wet his appetite for the game years later, and didn't do enough keep him.

I'm very happy for Micheal. I pleased Ferrari seems happy with their direction for next year. If a few other teams step up thier games... next season may prove expensive for me.

I am so happy to see Schumi race next year. It should be a fantastic season with Alonso, Hamilton, Vettel and hopefully Schumi duking it out for the title. I can't wait for the season to start.

Best F1 news in a long long long time.

I'm pumped. Seeing how he'll do against the young guns. Finally an entertaining reason to watch next season's overly politicized snoozefest formula.

I think it comes down to whether a particular driver or team is more important to you.

To me drivers are more important than teams. Which makes me a lukewarm Ferrari supporter I suppose. :)

In 2005 and 2006 I was cheering for Alonso and felt somewhat scizo. Next year my planets are in alignment and driver and team are on the same side. :)

Easy there: 4rePhil is a great guy with deep knowledge of F1. He cares greatly about the sport as do I. MS switches his alliance, so us fans are allowed to do the same thing. No biggie.

As for "collapsing completely": That's utter nonsense. F1 just had one of its best seasons this year and is headed for an epic year with more teams, drivers and regional variety than in many years. Nobody can predict who'll win it and having MS back is just the icing on the cake, but certainly not its foundation.

I'm in the same boat ( minus the Alonso support :) ) I'll be cheering for Massa and the red cars, but MS is the one who drew me into the sport in the first place when he first came to Ferrari, and I'm absolutely ecstatic that he's back. I would really love to see him stick it to the rest of the field, and hope that he's not making a mistake.

I ahve been a race fan since I was a young boy. F1 here in the states was never that widely televised so I couldn't follow it much outside of the Monaco race that was always shown on ABC's Wide World of Sports. When ESPN started showing the races I was a casual fan. Upon watching more I soon found myself pulling for the Bennetton team and the young German driver. After winning 2 WDC this guy switches to Ferrari. Not knowing the history of Ferrari and F1 I thought "what a fool!" Then over the years he resurrected the team and won 5 more driving championships. Yes, MS is something special behind the wheel of a F1 car and I am happy to see him back.

I will be pulling for him to surpass 100 victories and extend his WDC count. However, I will also be pulling for FM and FA (in that order) to team up and win the WCC for Ferrari.

As othere have said - it looks to be an EPIC year.

BTW - I am surprised that a 3 year deal was signed.

"Although initially for one year, the deal is thought to allow Schumacher a chance to renew, should his comeback be as successful as many expect. Mercedes is likely to be covering its bases with the big-name signing, until Sebastian Vettel is free from his Red Bull contract in 2012. "

Happy that Schumacher has returned though I am a little sad not to see him with Ferrari. I am a little concerned about the fact thet MS was GOD in Maranello and all the doors were opened for him--including "Gestione Sportiva". If is true that Ferrari started their 2010 car early Schumacher probably knows a lot of little secrets...and now bring them to mercedes...Hallo LDM, are you OK with that??!!
I hope Ferrari doesn't drop the ball on Vettel in a year or two!!!

Who knows whether he'll be right back on pace, but it should still lead to a very interesting season in 2010!

    Many Tifosi do as well.

Unfortunately, MS (who raced alongside Vettel, remember), Mercedes and Haug and others are all playing the German nationality card to lure him to the dark side...

and let's not forget that Mercedes can match Ferrari with the ability to throw bushels of money at him...

    Get your popcorn ready.

MS will be back as a man on a mission. He is absolutely sure that he is stepping into a competitive ride (maybe the miserable F60 factored into his decision this year), and his recent karting activities have him convinced he still has the quick brain and reflexes needed to compete. He also has had extensive track time in various cars to ensure he can be competitive. Add in his phenomenal working out and preperation and it is clear to see that the man has done all he can to prepare himself.

After seeing other 40 yr olds such as Favre and others able to compete at a high level, he knows he can still compete. If anyone could be a WDC post-40, MS has to be the poster child... it will take a brave man to bet against a very successful return to glory.

It will be very interesting the first time LH tries to chop MS...

i've always wondered why athletes retire only to try comebacks. boxers comeback until they get their brains scrambled, footballers get so broke up they can't move. what does schumacher hope to prove? can he add to his laurels? he's already the best ever. what will he do if he's not winning? we've seen his antics before when he was at the top of his game. will his techniques seem pathetic attempts by an old man trying to run with the young bucks? i wish him the best. i'd just hate to see him tarnish a great legacy. we'll have to wait and see.

+1, well said. He certainly will be an interesting addition to the field though. I won't hold his lack of success in 2010 against him, he's been away from the sport and his age has to have affected his reflexes somewhat. He is driving a contender and I believe he has to be viewed as the current crop's 'professor', he'll be a step ahead of his teammate corraling the better people within Brawn to concentrate on his car and determining the optimum time to use plan B when race conditions call for a quick decision. The question is, will it be enough to make up for his slight lack of pace? I believe he will finish top five in points (barely) but at the end of the year, Rosberg will have accumulated more points and outqualified him. As we should expect.
