Hi, whilst driving my 1976 308 GTB today (GRP) I heard a "ting" from underneath the car and saw something bounce across the road in my mirror. I stopped and found a small "C" washer which I presume is what fell out. I thought I also saw something else fall off with it but couldn't find anything.

Please refer attached picture. The washer is 23mm in diameter and the centre hole/slot is 10mm.

Anyone recongise what this might be or where it may have come from? The car seems to be driving fine but I'm a little nervous about going too far.

    Thanks.

That's a shim. Generally shims are used in fitting body panels (to make panels fit flush). Shims can also be used in the suspension.

Sounds a little small for a 308 A-arm mount shim -- thought those were at least 12mm diameter threads (but not 100% sure about that -- and certainly no harm in checking those locations).

Might be from the AC compressor mounting (item 6):

but also might just be an extra loose part that the Mechanic had dropped and couldn't find ;)

Yeah I am pretty sure it goes to the AC compressor mounting bracket.

Thanks everyone, wow that was a quick response! Steve and Helmut I think you may be right as I had to partially remove the compressor a couple of days back to fit a new belt and I though I heard something drop when I undid the stud at the top (#6 in the diagram) but couldn't find anything. When refitting I ended up putting in a couple of normal washers to pack it up to fit so that explains the gap.

I assume they (Ferrari) used shims to allow you to adjust the angle for the belt?

Yes, I'm in agreement, compressor shim. Knew I ran into them some where.
