Some years ago I posted a catalog number (McMaster Carr) for a black, closed-cell foam to be used as a replacement for the engine-side of the passenger firewall. I see it referenced in one of Jon's restoration threads from 2005. However, the catalog page gives me an error. I cannot locate the receipt, and McMaster-Carr's records do not go back that far (I have tried).

Has anyone used this material and if so, do they have the reference number? It is a black, rather dense, closed-cell foam with moderate to high resistance to oil, moderate temperature, etc. I ordered up what I thought was the product only to find it incorrect. The proper foam came with both plain backing or adhesive backing. I simply can't find the original number. It was rather inexpensive as I recall, maybe $20 U.S. for a large sheet.

    Any help is appreciated.

After much searching I am replacing my rotten foam with a product from a company called 'Foam Techniques Ltd.'
www.foamtechniques.co.uk They will make an 8-9 mm thick reconsituted NBR foam that is very similar to original in density (FT80) with a 2-3mm neoprene facing bonded to it (Ft-CPN) which is quite firm. I am just about to order it and should have it by the end of Jan. It is smoother than original in finish but should out perform the old stuff masively, bieng quoted as ok for fuel and temp resistant to 110 degrees C.The bad news is the cost - around 110 GBP for a 2m by 1m sheet. If you want I will post a photo when I get it.

Unfortunately I have the same problem you do.

Ordered it more than 2 yrs ago from them, just checked.

Do you think there may be a thread/reference here?

I'll try to do some digging.

Dave - you are brilliant - I was looking for this post and couldn't find it. I will study 9349k4 and see if it is the one. First glance - yes. More to come.

    Thanks.

I just ordered a sheet with adhesive back. I'll let everyone know if it is correct when it arrives. Should be mid-week.

Thanks again, Dave. Alberto - I believe this is the material, but confirmation will come in a few days.

Thanks Dave - 9349k22 is the right stuff. I ordered a standard sheet of 1/2 inch, with adhesive backing. More than I need. Cost approximately $50. Sheet is 36" by 48".

Jim, isn't 48" too short? Regards, Alberto

Some of the cars are different. Mine has approximatelyh 6 inches of foam above the aluminum shield that extends from wall to wall (behind the fuel tank on the left to behind the fuel tank on the right.

There are two natural breaks in the expanse above the aluminum. You can cleanly cut the foam where the crankcase ventilation canister mounts on the wall, or where the fuse box sits on the firewall. The foam deforms enough that if cut cleanly (razor blade), and squished together at the seam, it will be barely visible. If cut on the outboard side of the crankcase vapor canister it will be sufficiently hidden below the engine bay opening. I will let you know when I cut and adhere it to the wall. I can take some pictures. It will be a few weeks.

The temperature rating is only to a maximum of 220 F. Is this material sufficient to be used for the firewall insulation?

Is anyone else using another product for this application?
