correct washer bottle for a '77?

It's the bag type with the washer pump attached to it. It is located in the center of the plastic tub and attached to the tub. The pump almost hits the back of the radiator. Call Rutlands and see if you can get one from a salvage car. I bet they are a bit pricy.

 

I have an early '77 - 20613. It's got the bag, if that helps...

+1. Mine has the bag. I always thought it was a bit cheesy! When I first got the car, I thought it was a half-assed repair by some doofus!

 

I see Detroit and Steve King have my younger and older brothers. My 77 GTB 20783 has a bag. These are available from Superformance with the pump.

When i first started getting into the construction aspects of my car back about 1985, I thought the whole car was built that way!

Everything pop riveted on, fiberglass wrapped around steel supports here and there, etc. I finally decided that is the only way you can really build a limited production car and not have it cost a fortune.

I've got a '78 GTS and it has a plastic (leaking) bottle. Maybe I'll go with the bag. Price isn't too bad. Anyone know if these are available in the states?

That bag appears to be identical to the OEM washer bag / pump that came with my 1978 Fiat X1/9.

I'm the original owner of the X1/9, so I know it's OEM factory spec.

Point being that a poke around some Fiat wrecking yards / parts suppliers should get you one of these for way cheap money!

As a long time Fiat guy, you will never find a non-leaking X1/9 washer bag with a working pump.

 

For the record, I have an October 77 - 22871. US model. It has the plastic washer bottle that hangs off a bracket. The bottle actually hangs inside the spare tire.

 

And I've got 22891 (Nov. 1977) that uses the plastic bottle + bracket arrangement as described for 22871.

 

Doug I believe the change over to the plastic tire cover and plastic bottle was in 1978.

 

My Sept, 1978 manufactured car has a hard bottle and hard fiberglass tire well/brake booster cover.

+1 my Lancia Scorpions use the exact same water bags, I used to have a bunch of the that I threw away but I may have a couple left. Also used to get them from wrecking yard for like $2.00 a piece.

 

These washer bags were fitted to all Fiats in the 70's and early 80's so they are pretty common, although come in different shapes and sizes. I would not advise getting a used one as they don't last too long and often spring a leak where they've been folded a little or rubbing on something.

We had -15º temps here in Manchester, UK and I pulled my washer bottle out of my GT4 because it had frozen solid (although I was more bothered about the coolant freezing of course but it has been ok).

That bag must keep nice and warm in a GTB/S that close to the radiator - it sits in the headlamp area in a GT4 just like an X19

Funny story attached to this car and colour. My late father and I went to the Melbourne Motorshow in 1978 and this very car was on display. At the time he was seriously looking to fulfill his life long ambition of buying a Ferrari after decades of blood, sweat and tears. He looked at the car and proclaimed "who would buy a green Ferrari? ". Like most newbies he wanted red. So when he visits the dealer after the motor show he finds that the green car was $42,500 Australian and ordering a red one would take 6 months and the price would be $48,000 (rampant inflation in Australia at the time). So he reasons he could get a pretty good red respray for that and he didn't want a crappy fibreglass body anyway, so he up and buys the green car! Over the years the colour grew on us and when he repainted it years later it was in the original colour. I bought it from him in 1986 and after using it rather vigourously for 3 years I did the full nut and bolt restoration- it took 10 years; but that's a story for another day. There was never a moments doubt that it would be restored in anything other than the original Pino Verdi.
