I don't think "recovery" of the program is the right word to use in any respect other than the fans' recovery from the shock of Leach's firing.

First I'll be clear, the Dread Pirate Leach holds a very large warm spot in my heart and mind. His first year in Lubbock was my first year in Lubbock. I've followed the Tech Football trajectory with lots of pride in my heart.

After the shock has worn off, I now feel that Leach's era of success had peaked at the end of last year.

State of the program with respect to defense:

I died a death last year when we melted down against Ole Miss after the best season ever at Tech. In that game, Jevon Snead smashed out teeth in and stepped on our throats. I had 50 yard line seats. I was sick. Tech has never had a defense. That defensive weakness appears to be changing with respect to Tuberville's hire. The days of Tech winning games because they scored 60 points and held the opponent to 48 points are over.

    Regarding offense:

We'll see about the offense. Leach was an innovator. But the ability for Leach to sneak up on opponents with this innovative offense is over. Our hope is that he will keep the Leach spread offense. Which, BTW, is now being successfully implemented by many coaches besides Leach. So innovator that he was, I choose to believe that the Leach Spread magic juju beans aren't as magical as they once were. That cat is out of the bag.

In his press conference today he made it clear he will be a CEO style HC. Tuberville fits the administration's desires for a good old boy who will schmooze with the boosters. There will be a new athletic director before summer. I hope all our opponents shrug off Tuberville and think it will take some retooling years. But there does exist an opportunity for him to revamp the defense while very lightly touching the proven successful offense.

Nebraska just better hope that Missouri's departure sends Okie State to balance out the Big 12 North instead of Texas Tech. :)

    By the way... Roll Tide!

The arrogance of Texas to put "2008-2009 Big 12 South Champs" on their office wall, when in reality there was a three way tie, left me with a sour taste. So while I should have rooted for a Big 12 South national champion, I could not root for Texas.

On Friday I wore my Tech sweatshirt to work and reminded each Texas fan that we won our bowl game. ;)

    ?????

In case you haven't looked at a map recently, there is no harbor for Jimmy to dock the "Three Rings." ;)

He is, however, from a hairstyle standpoint, uniquely qualified to look good on the sidelines in the midst of blustering 55mph south plains winds.

Jimmy Johnson was never a possibilty.

I wouldn't think like that. Tuberville has ADD. His first year at Texas Tech will be his best. You heard it here, first.

Maybe I didn't make my point clear. I think he will hit the ground running (no pun intended) and have success out of the gate, and I hope our conference opponents overlook at their dates with Tech because they feel differently.

As to his ADD, you probably know that better than I do. I only knew him by name until a week ago. My fingers are crossed that there will be a clear heir apparent like there is at Texas with Muschamp.

Any names pop-up in the rumor'mill for the USC head-coaching gig?

Being a Trojan fan, I wouldn't mind if Jeff Fisher of the Titans showed interest. Or perhaps even Jon Gruden being considered would be cool. . .

I've heard Oregon State's coach mentioned a few times for the USC job.

Good for you! I think the Texas fans will be okay, especially knowing our school will never have to make embarrassing t-shirts like this one.

Being a Titans fan I hope not, but Fisher waived off and is in the last two years of his contract that pay him ~7 million US Dollars a year, so that would be unlikely.

I was wondering about the guy who went to coach the Huskies?

P.S. When do we start the 2010 College Football thread? LOL

Oregon State just announced a three-year contract extention for Riley. Guess they heard about USC's interest as well...
