    This appears to be a "Space Saver" spare. I found it as a spare in my '79 308 that I just purchased. It is obviously not the stock spare. It says "Dino" on the outer rim along with "Ferrari". I thought it might be for a GT4 but, all the pictures I've seen of GT4 trunks, they all have normal sized spares. This rim is also an 18 incher. It appears to have been mounted once. The tire is like new and still has the nipples on it.

    This is the "Euro " spare that was standard on all Euro/R.O.W 308 GT4's and 308 gtb/s's up to the 308 QV MODELS!

    Rare as never fitted to US delivery cars!!!

    This must be the stock spare to my 308 then as it is a Euro Model. I just never have seen one in a 308 before. My '79 GTS has the single distributor, no smog pump, no cats, no charcoal vapor recovery canister, Borla Exhaust, small bumpers, no "Slow Down" lights. and all the instruments are in Italian and KPH. Thanks for the fast reply. I thought a previous owner may have just put this wheel in the car because the regular wheel had been lost. I bought an extra regular wheel and tire to replace this as the spare. I guess I'll put this one back in the car. I don't know a whole lot of the history of my car except that it was originally ordered and purchased in Sweden.

    Very nice Marty. Congrats on the purchase. I have a euro 308 as well but my speedo is in mph. The spare was available as a full size. Mine came with that at the huge cost of around $40. :)

    PS, take out that air filter and see if you have the airbox restrictions. If so, check out the appropriate thread and cut it out to make it breathe better.

    Its a euro airbox, you can tell by the shape of the snout, its not boxy with the provisions for the air door etc. Its the good one.

    What I dont understand is the DOT lamps and bumpers. The Euro cars had the front repeater but they were closer to the wheel opening. When they went US spec they moved them forward 5 inches and went rectangular. The lamps on his car are in the US position which would have required filling and re-drilling which isnt something one would have done during a DOT conversion on a 308, they would have simply put them in place of the small euro repeater. Also the single distributor could have been added like mine was to a US spec car.

    There are some strange things with the Swiss models. I have the same side indicators, it's hard to tell where the Swiss-ness ends and the US federalization begins. Maybe Swiss cars came stock with the big ugly side indicators? One thing I know for sure, it's going to be fun to figure it out. Pretty car, congrats.

    Another clue that your '79 is a non-US model is that the 1-4 camcover does not have the cast-in feature for mounting the air pump like '78-'79 US 308B/S and the brace piece is a separate part (i.e., not cast-in like a '78-'79 US version).

    I wondered this too when I purchased the car. The PO told me it was because the car was ordered in Sweden it had to be left hand drive with those side marker lights. I inspected the inner fenders to see if any holes were filled and for prior damage and found no evidence. (I was part owner of a body shop specializing in exotic cars for 12 years.) It does not have the "Diving Board" bumpers. I don't know much about Ferraris as this is my first one. But, unless there were three different sizes of bumpers, these are the small stubby ones. There are no 5mph shock absorbers behind them. My friend has an '81 GTSi with bumpers you could sit one gallon paint cans on. The distributor is stock. US Euro model cars that came with two distributors had the Slow Down lights on the dash and the US instruments in English with a speedo in MPH. Also, thanks to this thread, I learned that this particular spare tire was only installed in Euro cars that were not originally shipped to the US. I was also told that due to the Swedish cars having left hand drive, they were built from US destined "Blanks" which explained the US style rear valance exhaust cover instead of the Euro type rear end with no cover. Again, I have only been a Ferrari owner since July and all the above,(Other than inspecting for prior damage to the car myself), has just been "told" to me. There are also no body plates on the car stating anything about US compliance. Like I said, all this was told to me. I'm a Ferrari cherry but, with the help of this site and all you guys, I hope to get wiser and wiser. Planes are my business, cars are my passion. There is nothing that bothers me more when I listen to someone talk about their Cessna 172 that will do 250kts and climb at 5000fpm. I sincerely appreciate all the comments and anything you pros can set me straight on so I don't look foolish when I talk about my car out in the world. Sorry for the long dragged out post.

    Depending on the country the car was to be sold in new....it was typical for Ferrari to have what I call "Bitsa" cars... This was because of differing local regulations in countries and Ferraris of the time being virtually hand built!

    An example....

    In Australia the 2V 308i cars came new with US Market rear bumper and exhaust shield but Euro front bumper! Inside was the old 308 steering wheel with silver spokes(not the black Nardi one that the USA market and R.O.W market cars had)and the clock and oil temp guage were still on the dashboard(on the transmission console for USA/R.O.W. market)

    Ive seen here a late production original 2V 308i with a QV bodywork minus the Euro "Passing" Spotlights beneath the bumper!

    I had a relative who was working at the factory at the time and he explained to me that it was common practice to use parts bits until all used up then changeover to new/different parts on the same model during the production run!!!!

    This stuff drives historians and concours judges nuts......LOL

    Thanks Pete, Mine does have the silver spoked MOMO wheel. Speaking of judges and car shows. After I first got my car I drove it to a car show in my home town. Over 400 entrants with around 80 foreign entrants. I had no intention of entering my car in the show. I only entered it so I would have a good place to park without having to park it on the street and have to walk a mile or so to the activities. Also, it would allow me to keep an eye on my new baby while I walked around. They told me that since I was such a late entry, I would not be able to park with the other foreign cars in my class as there was no more room. I didn't care. I watched the judges nit pick the crap out of her. I wanted to tell them not to bother even judging it as I was only there for the parking spot and had not even prepared the car to be in a show. I could not believe it when it took First Place. I thought it was some kind of a joke. She won against Austin Martins, Porsches, Panteras, Mercedes, Lotus, etc.etc. All of which were show cars and prepared for the show. Mine was not even washed.

    Well, in fact the first time it wasn't my tire. It was my WHEEL!!!

    Three-piece wheels, and someone had obviously tightened the bolts holding them together to the point where they'd snap off. After changing to the space saver (now where does one leave the big rear wheel then???? - wash it off and put it on the rear bench. Can't angue with a GT4's versatility), I noticed that four of the 25 bolts that hold the wheels together had snapped off. A quick trip to the hardware store (on 31 December in the middle of nowhere in Austria) solved that. Changed the wheel back onto the car after it held air for a couple of hours.

    That was an interesting trip. A mere 2 weeks after purchasing the car, we were on our way cross-Europe to Venice, Italy for newyears eve. Good fun!!
