It was within 1 year of needing the "30k" rip off service when I purchased it. I refuse to pay $8k for a service on a $35k car. It does not make sense to me, I had the belt inspected by a well known Ferrari shop and they said it looked new to them so why change it????

    +1.

This horse has been beaten to death, but when I bought my first 348, it was still on its original belt, etc., which was 17 years old. When I bought my second, it was about the same.

It's a waste of money to change these out any more often than 10 years in my book, but that's just my opinion, I could be wrong.

Ask Daniel Pass (Ricambi America). He might have a good answer for you.

This is one of the problems as cars get older. It is why so many 400 series cars are in poor condition. Because the car is only "worth" 20k, they don't want to do the maintenance, which can exceed 10k. It does ignore the fact that it was the equivalent of a $200,000 car now, and the maintenance prices are not going to change as the car depreciates. Just the opposite - they are going to go up as the car gets older.

I have to say low 30s also. I think not having it serviced is going to hit you hard. It portrays an owner that is flippant about maintenance, and so you have to wonder what else lurks. I am not saying this is true, I am saying that's the impression I would get.

Example: I looked at a 1994 BMW 850 Csi. Only 225 in the US. "Enthusiast owned car." Had a broken driving light, obvious in pictures. I won't buy the car, just because the owner has not replaced the light. To me it just says they are not careful.

Sorry, not trying to be a butthead, just calling it like I see it.

Honestly, reading this, I would keep the car for myself if I were you (is the 360 a spider? If not then definitely keep the open car too).

One reason I don't see getting rid of my 355 is that it is not worth anywhere near on the market what it is worth to ME.

if that is what you guys think is fair for that car then i have a mint condition 348ts that has been very well cared for with every record from day one. also comes with a set of 19" asanti wheels with new tires. also has only 24k miles. if someone wants it i just started playing with the idea of selling it. looking for around 43k or 40k with factory wheels.

    thanks,
    Dustin

Sounds like an amazing first car to me!!! I would give it to my daughter before I sold it for to someone else for that price - so long as you make sure she respects the car and teach her how to drive it, you will have bought your daughter stories that will last her the rest of her life (worth much more than $36k).

You are right about the topic being beaten to death, but going 10 years between the major service is suicidal in my opinion.

This statement is misleading. It is more than the belt that needs to be inspected, and the $8,000 that you refuse to pay is not for a service where you simply remove JUST an old belt and slap on a new one. The belt can likely go 50,000 miles IF the tensioners don't seize, but IF my aunt had balls she would be my uncle.....

My 348 had the original belt on when I bought it in December (16 years old with 15k miles), but I wouldn't advocate anyone taking it that far. Since I can still feel the pain of writing the check last week for my car's first ever major service, (assuming I still have the car in 5 years) I will be tempted to "stretch the interval" a bit. I suppose most people put themselves on that every-5-year plan so they can sleep at night... :)

I have decided to give the car to my daughter, at $35k is she blows the engine or clutch so be it. The car has had regular service since new including oil changes every 3k miles, gearbox oil changes, etc. If you want to throw away a bunch of money on parts that Ferrari said needs changed every 3 years or 36k miles so be it. Are they using some special rubber that only Ferrari can get to make the belts and water pumps so fragile? Every other car is much longer so I don't understand why Ferrari is different. My 360 had the major done right before me buying it and it did not make the value of the car go up any. If I spend the money to get the service done will it make the value of the car go up enough to substantiate the price? Probably not. I am not upset about the price as my AMG Benz lost way more money than this car and I got a lot of smiles out of it. Way worth the money it cost or lost.

Not trying to tell you what to do, but please get your daughter signed up for DE or something similar so she can learn the limits of the car. Even though she isn't full of testosterone, there will be temptation with a car like that.

At the same time, good on you. I'm sure you have made her day, week...year! To have such a cool car at 18 is sweet!

May or may not be true. I think in this market you can get the right money if you find the right buyer, but you need to be patient.

I had my TT Z06 listed for sale for over a year before someone bought it for what I wanted. (now it's in saudi)

If someone is looking for your exact car they will be willing to pay the money for it, IMO.

Awesome! I hope she enjoys it, and respects the power. I know I could not have handled such a car as an 18 year old. My 140 hp Toyota was enough to being me a little past the edge of my driving ability.

    Maybe it's just me,
but i'd rather have my 18 y old unexperienced driver kid just walk than put him in a 300 bhp car.

blowing a clutch or an engine isn't a problem, but losing the car on a curve or being caught in rain and having some problems with a rwd car and simply crashing, that would concern me.
well, just my opinion..i hope you'll sell your car.

    Might be.

I forgot to throw in that my first Ferrari - a 1982 308 - was on a 21 year old belt when I bought it. :)

So the first Ferrari was still going after 21 years, the second after 17, and the third after 17.

So either someone's lying about having to change these things out every time you take a shower, or I was on SUPER-D-DUPER DOUBLE SLAM SUICIDE.

+1. And a very lightweight 300 hp car at that.

In a teenager's hands, this car could quite easily provide a one way ticket to the cemetery. I'd give the car away before I would take such a risk.

You won't pay for a belt service, and you're just dumping it into your daughter's lap?

It'll be fine when the tensioners seize, belt tanks, and she seizes the motor. Perhaps in traffic at speed? Why don't you give her an old handgun you have laying around that you won't clean and maintain properly. It'll all work out.

Sell it for a loss like a man, use the precious dollars to send your child to a good hi-performance driving school (even if she has a Honda) and be a responsible parent. Maybe you are one, but seems like you're whining about parts and service prices, not giving your child a gift.

Next time, if you can't afford or won't pay to service a car, don't buy it.

Good luck to your daughter, hope she does well.

Agreed. The wheels being on backwards was the first thing I noticed.

As to giving the 348 to your 18 year old daughter, I think you're completely crazy.

Assuming she can handle driving the car, I don't think the car would survive her ownership. My younger sister, who is quite hands-on (Technical Theatre) doesn't give a hoot about her car. She drives a Ford Focus, never checks her oil or tyres between services, and generally abuses the car. I imagine your daughter would be much the same - most girls are at that age.

At 26, I think I'm still young enough to remember exactly what it was like first starting to drive... it's enough to be thinking about the other cars around you, missing your turnings, occasionally being caught out by conditions (rain/ice/oil/leaves) and making sure you're being safe in a relatively dull car. In a Ferrari... well, now you have the added power, the temptation to go faster, the peer pressure to go faster and "show what the car can do", increased difficulty in the drive, etc. It's a recipe for disaster.

Honestly, I think giving this car to a teenager will result in you losing far more than just the car. You'll be providing the means and setting the scene for her to kill herself. Don't be a fool - get her something with cute styling and lots of airbags instead.

    All the best,
    Andrew.

I feel the same way about my 360. I am not going to sell anytime soon. might trade but have to get the right price or I'll keep it maybe until I drop dead 50 years from now who knows.

I'm 44 now and I remember clearly....let's see how fast this will go.... everytime I got behind the wheel of something different.
OOooo check it out, Chevy Berretta with a digital dash that registers in reverse, lets see how fast it goes in reverse. That is what kids do.

You guys are so paranoid about your cars. :) How many people wish their parent would have given them a cool car to drive? I am not whinning about $ for the car, but it is simple economics wasting money. If I could not afford the car do you really think I would own a 360, Twin Turbo NSX, CL55 AMG Benz etc? Hell, I think my daughter can drive better than some people on this forum.

I am not an internet forum arguing type of person so this is the last reply for me on this thread. All I did was ask what the car is worth and so typical of internet forums, people feel the need to jump down your throat and tell you what you should do and start bashing you.

    Out

    Rob
