Mark McGwire is an idiot

I'm sure it was a carefully orchestrated move by LaRussa & company, namely the ownership group & even MLB, to allow Big'Mac to regain entry into the dug-out as an instructor / field-coach. Without closing the chapter on that "I'm not here to talk about the past", his presence w/ the Cards would've been a major distraction, if not a friction point w/ the media & ongoing investigations/scrutiny.

It's very unlikely he did this of his own volition. And w/o it, he would be in no-man's land of baseball infamy w/ Clemens, Sosa, Bonds, etc'.

 

I'm still a fan! There are drugs in every sport.

Speaking of our governer (CA), Tell me he didn't do Steriods. And he's our Governer!!!! AND, bottom line is: Because of steriods he is where he is, PERIOD!!!!!!!!!!!!! Look deep into this one before you comment. It's true.

I'm almost certain that Arnold has openly admitted steroid use.

It's true that McGwire got where he is because of steroids. It's just spineless for him not to admit it.

 

He also temporarily forgot how to speak english while in front of congress.

I think Mark did the right thing. McGwire did more for baseball in the last 20 years than anyone. The summer of '98 was my second favorite (after the Mariners 2001 summer yea I don't want to talk about that fall). I remember watching him in '88 for gods sakes. I do not and would not ever condone the use of PED's. The fact is the majority (Bill Romanaski sik) of professional sports have had PED users. Seriously??? McGwire is a bad guy?? Lyle Alzado?????? Ooh the most popular thread on F-Chat/sports MMA/UFC????? It's bad for baseball players to do it. Because they aren't beating the holy living **** out of each other???? Grow up People. Name me a single sport on the planet in the last 20 years that you can be certian that PED's were not taken. Sad everyone needs to bash baseball because people are actually being honest. I love football and am sure the same percentage of player used and currently do.



Ooh and Jack Clark who was an average baseball player in his best year needs to shut his mouth! Jack your name will NEVER be mentioned in the same breath as the HOF. So Shut up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I honestly don't have really have an opinion either way.. just trying to see both sides.. but... in regards to you're quote, isn't that the very reason some people are upset about the matter? Cuz he simply wouldnt have hit the HR's if he didn't use drugs? Only two players have hit more than 70 HR's twice... McGuire and Sosa.. er.. from what I heard on Sports Nation the other day

I think he has admitted it from about day one, unless I am mistaken.

McGwire's stupidity rests in that all of us already knew he took them, all he did was make a liar out of himself by denying it for years...

 

1) You are correct - he did more for baseball in an adverse way than anyone, save for Barry Bonds.
2) Badminton, Darts, Syncrhonized Swimming maybe..
3) Being honest? He had a chance to 'be honest' in front of Congress, and he evaded the questions, to me that is not being 'honest', it's being a weasel.

 

I haven't watched baseball in a while. I use to love the A's, especially when Conseco and Mcgwire were playing together. The team was unbeatable at one point. What really pisses me off about Mcgwire is that Conseco named him as one of the very many players who used roids in 2005 and later had to apologize to Mcgwire for accusing him. Either admit it or don't and keep your mouth shut.

 

Lets not forget that McGwire is still not being honest about his steroid use.

 

and that's the unfortunate part. me, personally, as a lifetime die-hard cardinal fan, i will still stand up and applaud him when he comes out on opening day, but for right now, i want some more information from him. where did he get the steroids? why did he continue taking them when he was in relatively good shape? etc...but then again, on the other hand, i've been ready for the past 5 years to move on from the steroid era. it was what it was, the sports been cleaned up for the most part, people just have to take the era as what it was and move on.

 

I'm a Cardinals fan as well, but I have absolutely zero respect for McGwire and his refusal to truly come clean. My opinion of LaRussa is fading fast as well...

 

i honestly think larussa is one of the best managers in the history of the game, and i will support him up until the day he retires, however, i just can't believe that he had both canseco and mcgwire on his team, and didn't have any idea about what was going on. yeah, it's possible he had no idea whatsoever about what was going on, but i'm finding it somewhat doubtful that he didn't have any inkling of an idea. i do believe he never actually saw anything though.

 

The way he's supporting McGwire right now is absurd. LaRussa seems to think that McGwire is some noble character who has really shown a lot of guts by admitting his steroid use. Please!

 

Your bias is unbelievable, you are going to applaud him, and you are defending him by saying 'it was what it was', and then by saying it's time to 'move on'. Who cares where he got them and why he took them, the point is he lied, and continued to lie for years, now he kinda fesses up and expects all to be forgotten.

I like LaRussa also, but if you use your own common sense, you know the answers to your own observations about LaRussa - he knew, how on earth could he not? He was around these guys every day - we are not and WE knew.

LaRussa has no choice but to accept McGwire, he may not like it, but Tony's deal is he needs coaching help, he thinks McGwire is it, that's why he hired him. I'm OK with the hire.

 

It's different for lifers who were born oh, about 1960 and prior. Much different.

 

and that's part of the fun of baseball, my grandpa grew up loving the browns, saw babe ruth play, lou gehrig, dimaggio, etc. i grew up in the steroid era, albeit i didn't know it at the time, no one really did until about the time mcgwire and sosa were swinging for the fences. but, i still got to see players like ozzie smith, ken griffey jr, and randy johnson play during the prime of their careers. i don't mean to be biased towards mcgwire and larussa, but hey, i was 11 during the home run chase, and for most of my life, tony larussa has been the manager of the cardinals.

I can stomach the hire, but take issue with LaRussa pretending that McGwire is some sort of noble guy. Tony's just making himself look like a fool by grandstanding for McGwire.

 

It's no different than anyone that works around someone they 'like' that has 'issues', you find ways to deal with it, denial, acceptance, make excuses for it, whatever it takes.

Someone that has 5 DUI's will get in a wreck while drunk and kill someone, and you can bet there will be folks that take his side and say 'it's not his fault'. Well, yeah, it is...
