You do realize that image is not the actual iSlate and not from Apple, right? It's simply an artist's rendition of what it might look like.

And a *roaring* success they've been!

"Tablet PC's" have had (relatively speaking) more $ thrown at 'em by the Evil Empire than anything outside of Windows 7...... In a few, very niche, markets they've done ok, but overall, even you've surely gotta admit, they *suck*. [Why "nobody" bought 'em maybe?]

Steve said they won't do a "tablet/slate/whatever" until they can blow your doors off - We'll see I guess.

    Cheers,
    Ian

Thanks for validating the common belief that Apple fanboys are zombies & would buy Job's poop in a bag (or in this case, ancient technology).

Or make blind assumptions about a product that has not been released yet. Pretty silly either way, huh?

Well, he said it - not me.

So Apple is going to revolutionize the computing industry with this slate?

I don't have a clue what Apple is going to unveil, but I'd bet everything I own that it's not seven-year-old technology.

Not "the computing industry", but maybe the (hugely failed with M$) "tablet industry".... Maybe they'll even give us a new "form factor!"......

They did it with the personal computer, the personal music player and the smart phone, why not here as well?.....

    Just sayin', cheers,

Apple doesn't come in late to an old technology and simply copy what is out there and certainly isn't going to start now. Why not stop the foolishness and just wait to see what the iSlate really is before going on a bashing parade? Your claims are as ridiculous as those of the lustful Apple lovers that you loathe.

LOL, fanboi yes, zombie, not yet.......and hey, I designed and marketed (and carried) Steves' poop for 8 years, so I trust that he'll do right by me.....I haven't been disappointed yet.....and if I needed safety in numbers, lots of people agree with me......how much Apple stuff is "ancient technology"?....that needs some citations......

I'll withold final judgement on this until I see what it actually is.

However I am having a hard time seeing where this fits in.

An iPod Touch 64gb is $400.

This device as shown/described doesn't have a keyboard, so it's not going to be useful as a laptop (i.e. image editing, word processing, excel).

You can buy tablet PC's for the $1000 price range all day long, and they ain't selling. I think it's because their usefulness is very limited. For Apple to pull it off, they would have to have a killer app for this device, but I don't see what it would be.

It's not eBooks, because an LCD screen device will have shortcomings vs. an eInk device like the kindle - mostly battery life which is a MAJOR concern on an e-reader, and the iPod is already horrendously bad for battery life.

Until we know what the hook is we can't say if it will be worthwhile but it will be interesting to see what they come up with.

If they can make it useful as a laptop even though it won't have a real keyboard, it will sell like hot cakes. A beautiful display to watch things on, and a slate computer to do computing tasks on, from editing to photoshopping to email and web-surfing. All in an elegantly designed package at $799.

That's what I am hoping for. Knowing Apple, it will do half that, and cost twice as much.

And yes, it's 7 years old conceptually, and I have bought and used a couple of tablet PCs. I have one by RIM that I use daily, and it's great to travel with...I watch media on it, use it to move pictures off my camera and back them up, and to surf the web with. It's thin and small, and does everything I need on the road. At a pinch, I could use my phone, but it gets old to scroll up and down and sideways and not be able to do more than just email and simple browsing. The tablet gives me the ability to do a lot more, without having to lug a laptop around.

    Isn't speculating fun! ;)

We don't even *know* if it exists yet (!), let alone does/doesn't have a kbd etc. But, we've got the whole gamut from "it sucks, it'll never sell" thru to "I want one regardless!"

I don't think it'll have a "real" kbd built in, but they've now got a lot of patents around tactile feedback etc - My guess is it'll have a full size virtual kbd, with feedback, whenever warranted.

Another patent I noticed is what I'll call "3d viewing technology" - A pic is worth 1K words here - See below - May not be the killer app, but if this thing appears we're gonna be "multi-swiping" and "rocking" around in front of it.... Which should be fun for observers :D

They're not selling 'cos they're (generally) crap IMHO! - Not the H/W, but M$ crap. Until the empire can see (and hence copy, again) what Apple does they don't have the imagination to even think of a "killer app"! [Dons flamesuit and grabs popcorn here ;)]

With all due respect Mike, you and I don't see it, but that's why Steve makes the big bucks! Love him or hate him, he does have a pretty good track record......

    Cheers,
    Ian

Ian, a 3d bar graph, or any other 3d data visualization, is hardly earth shattering. The whole concept of data visualization is usually overdone. You either get it, or you don't, and if you don't, no amount of fancy colorful pictures will make you understand it more, or give it any more meaning. That's the very essence of what the rest of the world hates about fanboys. They crow on and on about the most trivial things, as if it's going to revolutionize how the world works. In reality, it makes idiots who don't know how to use something like a navigation app finally start using a navigation app. Not everybody is that dumb.

I never said it was. I simply noted that they've recently been granted a patent, and made what I thought was a semi-funny comment about users "rocking around" in their seats using it. Not earth shattering, not revolutionary, just simple speculation that maybe this thing (if it exists and gets released) will incorporate the technology - Which, AFAIK, is not being used anywhere else in this (to date, very poorly supported) sector.

I object to that - Uncalled for and out of line. If you don't have anything either constructive or critical to add to this "idle speculation" debate can I humbly suggest you STFU?

I *really* don't need to be called a fanboy just because I thought it was interesting and/or funny.

You don't like Apple's stuff, fine, that's your right. But to call people "dumb" because they do is an insult and shows considerable ignorance IMHO.

    Cheers,
    Ian

Tit for tat, Ian. That was his perception of the unexplainable hype that surrounds Apple stuff. You are no better for stating that PC tablets failed because of Microsoft.

In reality, it is the lack of keyboard & extra expense of the screen that fail. I know this because I owned a Motion Computing tablet from day one - yes, the sleek metal design that Apple soon copied. The main issue was *no keyboard*. It just gets old after a while... any typing of great expanse requires a keyboard. The tablets with swing-out keyboards solved this issue later on, but again the screen just adds extra expense when price comparing to a conventional laptop. Over time the touch screen becomes a pricey novelty, and tablet buyers go back to laptops.

I don't mind the emotions in this thread (computers are close to our hearts) but let's get the facts straight at least :)

Ian, I wasn't calling you dumb. I wrote:

That is the context of the statement, why would you think it applied to you? Did you not use a navigation app before it came out on the iphone? Or are you actually dumb, and the comment hit too close to home?

I didn't call you dumb then, but since you insist on being lumped in with the dumb people, well, I guess that does make you dumb.

    Don't be a dumbass.

"Tit for tat" I can deal with. I started the thread to speculate about what may be coming, not to hype anything. He then basically attacked me, turns out twice:

I didn't post a "fancy colorful" picture, I didn't "crow on & on" and I never said anything about revolutions...... I simply posted what I thought was an interesting "snippet" of what may be in this thing.

I still believe one of the reasons they haven't taken off is because the O/S is lacking, and I stand by that. Will Apple release the "killer UI/app(s)" that makes these things viable? I dunno the answer - I know the Linux guys have been trying for a while as well, and I agree with your comment:

Certainly, that's been the case to date. Don't get me wrong, Apple have dropped some clunkers over the years, but their record isn't too bad overall.......

It seems that *if* they could do a virtual kbd that "felt" like a real one, many objections would be overcome....... Maybe it will have a real kbd?......

    Many.
