Only because it was a total sell-out to sappy self-centered females. I guess Avatar is the same way, only for technical geeks? Same strategy, different niche audience... could be a hit, too, considering.

Personally, I love Cameron's films. Always have, and probably always will. I grew up on Aliens and the Terminator, the Abyss, True Lies and Titanic. I remember hating...HATING...Titanic and Dicaprio because EVERY girl I knew in highschool talked about them constantly. About a year later I saw the movie for the first time on VHS and was absolutely blown away. To this day, I will throw down with anyone who believes that Titanic is not a great film. I mean, if you don't like it you don't like it...but to me it is one of the most technically competent and emotionally resonant films I've ever seen.

I had been following the development, or lack there of for Avatar, for years. I had huge expectations based upon what I'd read...then when I saw the first preview...Severe disappointment. I thought it would fail, that everyone had over promised on the project. Now, having seen it, I can thankfully say that I was wrong. I think the movie is an absolute masterpiece and an amazing way to bookend a decade that Peter Jackson started with Lord of The Rings. While I can honestly concede that it is not perfect, and has its faults, I can thankfully say that the overall pacing, character resonance, scale and action hugely overwhelm any faults I have with the movie as a whole.

Most of the movies I watch are subtitled, many in black and white. I recently revisited one of my favorite "action epics", Kurosawa's Seven Samurai. I really love movies that can start you at one place and introduce you to something, then take you to this place that you really wanted to get to, but had no idea who you were going to meet, or what events would unfold. I would say that Avatar is such a film. It's premise and plot may be simple, the dialogue a little dodgy...but in the end that really doesn't matter so much. It's a rewarding experience with an important message. And it takes a master to deliver those qualities in an entertaining way.

Anunakki would be proud. I went to see it. It was okay, but the blacklight world was just a little rediculous. I would have loved it if I did LSD or shrooms. It just reminded me of that crowd that gets high & stares at flourescent blacklight stuff (which I guess aligns with the preachy liberal message). The preachiness really got in the way of my enjoyment, too. I think they really overdid the anti-war, anti-whitey social message. But other than that it was okay... as stated above, overall pacing & action scenes made up for any other faults. Will not watch it again, though.

Its going to take out Titanic (which blows my mind because it isnt THAT good).

Of course this is unadjusted for inflation.

Not too hard to do when you're charging about 550% more per ticket. Not impressed....

Certainly more per ticket but where do you get 550% ?

Average ticket price in the USA is ~$7.50

Average IMAX ticket is ~ $13

    Average 3D ticket is ~ $10

So are you saying that the IMAX tickets in your town are ~$30+ each ? Thats pretty crazy (and not true). Even if for some reason your local theater is charging $15 for a 3d ticket (which I wouldnt believe as even in LA they dont charge that much) at 550% that would mean the average regular ticket was $ 3 ? Ummm no...wrong again. Im sorry to interject facts into your diatribe.

You dont have to like the movie but making things up is kind of childish.

Not much better in IMAX. It wasn't filmed using IMAX cameras - it was just
adapted for IMAX projection. I've seen it both ways, and it was actually
better at Regal 3D than IMAX - the IMAX theater I was at was dated, the glasses
were worn, and the sound was WAY TOO FRICKIN' LOUD.

But I still want to see it a 3rd time just cuz it's an "EVENT" - not just a movie.
