We live in a very dishonest world. Dave Farret (Internet Name, nothing else but a crook) tried to scam me on purchasing my 360 currently for sale (This weekend). This is the second time this has happened to me, I still have the Cashiers check from the first guy in New York if that is where he truly was. He tried again to get me to sell my 360 with the Cashiers Check Scam / Pickup the car / and give him money when the car is picked up. I only provided this information for us Fchatters to be very careful selling your cars. Read below his dialogue and beware. He will have his day in the future, I gaurantee it.

    Previous emails below:

    How are you ?
Thanks for your response, after evaluation of the vehicle and due to time constraint,I am happy to inform you that I have concluded arrangements with my client and he was very happy with the condition of your car and he has issued a cashier cheque of ($105,500) which now covers the whole expenses of the purchase of your vehicle, tax, pickup of the vehicle from its location and shipping charges or any shipping arrangements together with the money that will come to me as interest for my effort, he also told me that he will be proceeding for his annual leave and will like this transaction to be over before he will go on leave, so When you receive cheque payment, you are expected to deduct the cost of your vehicle which is ($99,000) and send the remaining balance of ($6,500) to the agent (shipper) for him to be able to offset shipping & tax charges. After payment has reached you and balance sent to shipper, the shipper's agent will come for inspection, pick up (of vehicle & signing of title papers) and drive to a prepaid shipper to be shipped to my (client) and also conclude other necessary shipping arrangements. So you don't have to bother yourself about the pick up and shipping arrangements.
Please confirm the above and provide your payment information for your payment to be delivered to you via courier service.
    Please provide the following:
    1-LEGAL NAME IN FULL..............
    2. CONTACT ADDRESS......................
    3. PHONE NUMBER(S)...........................
I will be expecting your mail with full payment information so that we can proceed. Thanks And God Bless,
    Barr.Dave Farret

Why don't you just have Roy broker the car and skip all the headaches? He is really good at what he does. It's enough money that a professional should be involved in the transfer IMO.

Simple - make the terms bank wire transfer only. That is what the seller did for the 360 I purchased recently, I understood why it was necessary in this day and age, and paid the balance (after deposit) via wire transfer when I went to pick up the car. Simple and no worries for either party.

I only accept wires, this guy has no intentions of paying anyone, he is a car thief, I guess people just don't understand when I am trying to let them know what is out there and to beware. Enough said, lets move on.

Never trust anyone you don't know who writes "thanks and God bless". It's normally a Nigerian "friend" or a dodgy salesman.

The "Barr" should have been your first flag that this is a 411 scammer.

Even wires can be reversed for a few days (I cancelled a wire from a scam watch purchase that happened to me a few years ago). If you are doing a wire transfer I would at least have your banker get on the phone with the buyer's banker, and hold the car for four business days to make sure the wire does not get reversed.

I believe that's only if your bank has not actually completed the wire transfer. Once it is in the other person's account....it is their money. I have had a couple that have attempted to be reversed and they can only be reversed if the receiving bank OK's it.

I was not aware you can reverse a wire transfer. I always thought a wire transfer was fool proof.

    It can be done
You need 3-4 days for it to finalize. But your banker calling the sending bank is always the best way.

Trouble is, "fools are so clever....." [No offense intended to anyone here btw.]

My (limited) understanding is a "bank draft" is the tool of choice? - The buyer has removed the $ from his/her account in favor of the bank.... The seller has a draft, drawn on said (hopefully reputable?) bank that *cannot* be "reversed".....

    Comments?

    Cheers,
    Ian

    That's what I was thinking...

EDIT: When I sold my 328, I had a dealer broker the transaction. The cost was relatively small, and it saved me a lot of time, hassles and possibly grief. Just a thought. A few grand to have the transaction done with no drama was worth it, IMHO.

The good thing is that this is such an old scam, that 99.9% of people would have spotted it from the first e-mail. This scam has been around for years and years, and it's always the exact same.

    P.S.

If you get an e-mail saying you are the winner of a United Nations lottery, or that some Prince from some country has died, leaving behind millions and millions that you can have a part of, those are scams, too.

Consigned my 360 with our local Ferrari dealer when my F430 came in. Sure it cost me some money (all negotiable) but I had nothing to worry about, no idiots coming to my house to drive the car and all worked out great.

I'll never sell an exotic to someone I don't know without the help of a professional.

BTW, one of my friends was taken by a similar "cashier's check" scam a few years ago... basically the car was stolen and never recovered.

I bought a Rolex, did not receive it. I had made payments with credit card, and two wire transfers. I reversed the charged on the CC, and the bank allowed me to cancel one of the wire transfers that was three days old. I'm just saying don't send the car out the minute you think the transfer is complete. Get some reassurance from your bank that the money cannot be sucked back out. The thieves know what they can / cannot do. You need to be informed on your end also.

EXACTLY. Should be anyone's first clue!!!

British brogue mixed with 3rd World grammar - red flag!

I learn something new every day. Sounds like a good reason to cash out the account immediately upon receipt of funds... they can't reverse what is no longer there (I would hope???).

Guys this is a typical Nigerian 411 scam. They aren't trying to steal your car. The certified check will bounce, but by the time it does you would have already sent a portion of it ($6500) to them.
