it's a 30 year rule everywhere bar WA, and even then we have to see if someone can get an F40 through the hoops

Totally agree. The cutoff is early 80's for race cars and you've got to be very brave to stray outside of the Cosworth/Chev/Hewland world. Plenty of parts suppliers for those vs. paying through the nose for Ferrari to supply parts or major rebuilds.

I've also learnt that here is a huge gap between the condition that 95% of open wheelers are sold in and what you can reliably run on a track. Crossing that gap is an expensive exercise.

However, once you have a car sorted, the expense is comparable to say ocean yacht racing. It's illogical but not impossible. You only do 3 or 4 meetings a year and marque cars (i.e. recognized internationally) are proven to appreciate in value. Yachts meanwhile only go south!

Owning and driving a top end race car has long been on my "bucket list" and the experience has been everything I expected. I don't think there's any bigger adrenalin rush.

You should come and wander around the pit garages at a historic meeting. What you'll find are mostly die-hard enthusiasts who just love racing old cars, regardless of value or image. There are some wankers, just like any sport, but people who can afford to run a real car are way over needing to impress the punters.

Hey 360C how come you're 'over' cars at present? I thought since the initial grief with the Maser all was good? Remind Mrs 360C you can't sleep in a handbag if it all goes pear shaped :)

having gone down the 360ch road and the hurdles that were put up......a 288 is going to be hard, compliance will be an issue and my estimate is north of 30k on that.

F40..............dreaming, the moment it happens it will open the flood gates, and compliance again will be an issue.

The 360ch now registered doesnt mean i can drive every day, its a oncer, like once a year if I wanted to go for a drive, but its so uncomfortable and too noisy for street use. Am glad i have the reg which is handy for tarmac events but as an everday car....forget it

Lost the passion for them, don't really know why.
The Maserati continues to have transient electrical issues, nothing serious though. Great daily driver and I can't think of anything that I would swap it for if I felt the inclination to change.

The Mrs can buy her own handbags. I can't remember the last time she bought anything for me!

It was on mine too. Been there, done that and don't need to revisit it this life time :)
They are the best fun; but the smiles per mile per dollar spent just don't add up for me.

There are RHD 288's that exist. You could register those; but these cars are in relatively poor condition and a 288 resto is big dollars................and parts are non existent.

I agree,I race for over 20 years in Histroics and marque sports great fun,but the dollar value does not add up.
Even now I still think I might race a Atlanic car then I think of all the hours involved, cost the small amount of time you get on the track, forget it.
Plus dealing with the cockheads at CAMs or at a meeting.
Rather go on a holiday or a long drive.
Plus all the old farts at the meetings, forget it.

No argument with that, it's an irrational indulgence. But the effort:fun ratio is similar to sailing, diving, flying, etc and I think the pleasure of life is to have as many experiences as you can.

That's the sad part, a small number of horrible people make it needlessly unpleasant, for nothing other than their twisted pleasure in wielding (unelected) power. The CAMS nazi gave us sh*t at the Nov meeting, until Kevin Bartlett walked up and was totally enthusiastic about having an Indy car there. Suddenly the CAMS guy was our best mate...

what was their issue with the car?
They burn't me off,I was glad to get out of having to deal with them.
If I had my time again,I would not have gone into racing again, the 2nd time, wish I had bought a Bertram 35 or a wooden racing yacht of the 60s from the pen of Sparkman & Strphens.

We'd arranged to do the final logbook inspection at the meeting (easier to get an appointment with Kevin Rudd than this bloke). He inspected the car on Saturday but spat the dummy because we'd done 1 lap in the Friday practice. Said he would ban us for the rest of the meeting. (of course the driveshafts were broken at this stage anyway)

The Friday was a private practice day, no logbook required.

KB arrived, said he'd raced a T700 at Long Beach and "I want this car to run here if possible, just tell me what you need", suddenly the inspector's issue had never been there.

There was more, but you get the picture.

I believe so, but i'm not 100% sure if that was also the changing point from series I to series II...that is...maybe some series II still had the Dino badge.
