Here's a question for the folks who have recently redone their interiors. The rear shelf is basically two side pieces with a small piece in the middle covering the gap. It's #23 in the diagram. It looks like the piece has a vertical stud holding it down. Problem is, I have no idea what's holding this thing. Is it threaded with a nut? Maybe just friction fit? If there is a nut, I have no idea how to access the underside. I've pulled on it, but it seems to be held by more than just stiction. How do you remove this bugger?

The nut is accessible from the engine bay. I replaced it with a wingnut...

But depending on the car the nut may be under an aluminum heat shield that needs to come off first.

OK... that's just wrong, but it made me laugh.

I remember that precision engineering mantra when I used to work with my brother on elevators during college.

    Measure it with a yardstick
    Mark it with a chalk
    Cut it with a torch!

Depending on your car you may also have to remove the rear window

Ok, I'll check for access through the engine bay. I believe that there is a heat shield in the way, as JDubbya says. It'd be nice if there was just a little more room forward of the front bank.

How about this one: "There's nothing brute force and ignorance can't fix."

And getting to the nuts to remove the heat shield is actually more work than removing the rest of it. I thought about putting in a small access panel or something when I put it back together. I wish I would have!

I just got done removing this thing, what a pain. I love the idea of the wing nut upon reassembly, thanks!

Good idea on the wing nuts, putting my together right now.

Don't mean to hijack but could someone help with putting back together the pieces. There are two foam pieces that I can't recall where they came from. My car's an '89 328. Where do they go, what's the orientation, and sticky side goes where? the pieces are about 8 inches long by 3 inches wide.

I got mine loose enuf to use a hacksaw in the car underneath the piece. Shelf was already trashed to being careful to avoid ruining something was not an issue. Put in a new longer metric stud and used a fender washer and wing nut to fasten it when the time came. Just not enuf room and articulation in the engine compartment to get a hand tool (and hand) working through the foil insulation stuff.

If you can move the block/spacer from under the panel you should be able to get access to the large washer that holds the panel in place. I pulled up through the whole by twisting it through the hole.. dead easy to straighten out then put a butterfly nut back on to save future problems..

    Doing a thread revival here.

I'm in the process of removing the parcel shelf and I've managed to remove the aluminium heat shield in the engine bay but now I'm stuck trying to remove the center nut holding down the small middle piece. Any tool I put on that nut does not seem to fit. Can anyone confirm which size the bolt is?

I am holding mine down with a magnet for years never moved, that one nut is to much work to remove or install.

It should be an M6 nut, with the tool being a 10mm wrench. Many have changed it to a winged nut.

You know I may have remembered incorrectly. This is my 89 328 and it looks smaller than M6, probably an M5 stud. In that case, the nut on the other side requires an 8mm wrench and you can see that I have replaced it with a winged nut.

Well it's one of the 8mm or 10mm wrench anyway.

Pretty sure you're right. I didn't face any challenge there... just put the socket on and removed it like the other two on the outer ends.

You might need a deeper socket; be sure it's engaging the nut.
