    You might try to shine up the old one with some metal polish?
    I have some stuff that is white and then turns black when it hits the metal. After you wait a few minutes it takes out the small scratches and brings up the shine. Works great.

    Should be fine as long use very fine sand paper like 1200 grids.

    If the factory knob could be brought back to its former glory, you might want to re-install it. And if you want the shift numbers in color like black or grey or red, just use some automotive exterior paint and after it dries sand off the excess and then repolish to remove any fine scuffs. It will look awsome. The paint will remain in the recess of the numbers. You've got nothing to lose because you have the shiny knob. Post some pictures of your work! Thanks!

    Got the itch to polish the original knob back to original glory :)

    Hey MalibyGuy,

    Got it done per your suggestions, check it out :)

    1) My Old Scratched and Beat up Shift Knob.
    2) Use Red Touch up Paint for Knob engravings.
    3) Rough Polished sanded with 400 Grit sandpaper.
    4) Smooth Polished sanded with 1000 Grit sandpaper.
    5) Fine Polished sanded with 1200 Grit sandpaper.
    6) Very Shinny with Red Engravings, Now its a Brand New Knob again LOL.

    Thanks very much John & MalibuGuy. That's a very nice DIY and your results look great. I thought that this would be a good winter job to do on my 430 ;) A practical question though, is it easy to unscrew the shift knob? How tight do you need to screw it again?

    Hi Stef,

    You are welcome, this is very simple DIY job. The knob will unscrew of by twist the knob to left, to screw the knob back on twist to right but make sure adjust the bottom locking nut or else the knob engraving will be off. Give it a try and you will be Happy with Shinny results :D
