I am getting conflicting reports on the manuals that came with the 288s from the factory. Does anyone know for sure if there was a maintenance manual in the set that had the VIN of the car inscribed in it?

The 288 GTO was originally supplied with a book entitled "Warranty Card and Owners Service Book" (in addition to the owner's manual etc). The VIN is written in that book. I cant vouch for the fact that Ferrari included this in every car built, but I would imagine they did.

Remember, because the GTO was not a USA model to begin with, many of the cars standing in the USA today came via brokers and short-term first owners in Europe to be sold here as "new" used cars. Accordingly, at the point of sale in the USA in this period some 25 years ago, some were already without this booklet, and have remained so ever since. The cars I have come across, sometimes have this book, and sometimes they don't.
