So the car sat in the garage for the past 10 days during all this crummy weather we've had in SoCal. I hopped in today and she fired right up with a loud bark!

After my nice long drive this morning, I parked in the driveway and walked into the garage and noticed a few oil spots (see pic). She's not leaked anything before (granted, I've only had her about 6 weeks) but I had also been driving her every couple days.

FYI, the screw in the pic is about 3/8 in long.

So, is this 'normal' and nothing to sweat or should I get it looked at?

    TIA.

Common, yes. Normal, no. I'd say have it checked (or if mechanically inclined,
do it yourself). My 328 did the same thing - turned out to be a bad seal. Didn't
cost much to have it fixed.

Mind you that screw looks like the one from your "creonten capacitor" located under your oil pump under the sump plate. Its connected to the "thingy" to hold the "dodar" which helps the oil flow during tick over. :D Hope this helps.
As for the bit of oil, just monitor that and see what happens for a few days. Like has already been said it could just be a seal on its way out. Or it all could just amount to nothing. Monitor it i say.

Close...the screw came off the bottle that holds all of the blinker smoke.

Thanks...I'll keep an eye on the Texas-Tea droppings.

Mine leaks too, perhaps a little less but in my case I' ll wait until this coming November, when the car is due to a major service.

    Rick,

If you don't have one, go to an auto parts store and get a mechanic's inspection mirror. It's like a giant version of the what dentist uses. Find out where there leak is coming from...

The first place to look should be at the front of the engine at the timing belt cover. Stick the mirror underneath, facing upward, and have a flashlight in your other hand to shine into the mirror so you can illuminate the reflection. You'll want to see if oil is dripping down from the cam seals.

I realize it's quite possible that I'm telling you things you already know, but in any event I hope these steps will help future readers.

Not "normal" for a car to drip oil, of course.

I can't stand oil leaks, no matter how small, can't live with 'em.

Check it now, why are you waiting?

I can't think of a reason why I would wait to check a leak like that...

    See this thread.... http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=270071

And there were no drip marks on the concrete in my garage....

Take a look and find where it is coming from, although I imigane it is only a minor issue, imigane if you don't take a look.......something fails and your oil is pumped out on the ground.....best to check it out I think.

Thanks for all the comments. Went on over to the fine gentlemen at Cavallo Motorsports today and they threw it up on a rack for a visual inspection. No signs of any leaking anywhere. So, a couple theories:

    1) A neighbor (or my wife) is f-ing with me.
    2) I brought her in pretty hot and the coolant expanded after parking and burped up a bit through the overflow hose and picked up some grimy grease/oil along the way.

We suspect #2. I'll continue to monitor it.

Yeah, I'd re-think your assessment. I'd be more inclined to think that with the cold temperatures and the weeks of non-use, a seal may have leaked, but after driving it, it sealed up a bit.

    All speculation at this point.

Rick, I think further investigation is needed.

Keep looking till you find it, even if your theory 2) is correct (which I doubt and water and oil don't mix) that still means there is an oil leak. Find where it is coming from and then decide if you can leave it or if it needs immediate attention.

Cold? It maybe hits 55F at night in the garage. Weeks? More like 10 days. Anything's possible I suppose.

Yeah, I will keep a close eye on it but so far it hasn't leaked another drop. Was the strangest thing...car spent 20 minutes up in the air with 2 highly trained Ferrari guys looking for any signs and *nothing*. For now, I'm opting not to tear the engine bay apart chasing ghosts.

I do appreciate the concern and advice from everyone. Thanks.

Rick, my 348 sits for 3-4 months at a time (in the San Diego area). It's never leaked a drop. Had engine out service 8 months ago and has been driven 2000 miles since. I use redline 10-40 in the motor, redline 75-90 NS in the box. They are colored differently. Can you tell if there a diffeerence in color or odor?
If the guys at Cavallo couldn't find anything, just drive it. I used to have any annoying intermittant leak in my 308QV. Turned out to be the shift shaft seal... would leak if parked in reverse but would not leak if parked in neutral.
We'll have to go for a drive when we are back for good in May of this year. I know of some great roads to take up near Lake Wofford.

    Regards
    Mike

Well, the update is that it has dripped a few times since - never anything monumental but it is becoming more frequent.

I took it back to Cavallo Motorsports yesterday since I was able to localize where the leak was coming from (through the two screws holding the perforated plate to the bottom of the bell housing). Seems that this is brake fluid leaking due to bad seals in the shift shaft linkages. Scheduled to get it fixed in about a week.
