    The red is a wee bit 'bling bling' for this model.
    The wheels are definitely bling bling
    Softop hey why not he said reluctantly.
    the stereo is silly but fun.
    The car certainly has lost all its class until you rectify the last!

    The badge never seen that before but certainly far more convincing than the rest of the car! I have a feeling its not original like the other stuff.

    After being offered by an FChatter in Illinois early last year, it was back at Fantasy Junction, where it also had been offered for sale asking $39,000 in 2006.

    Now it is shown as sold. What was the asking price?

    PS "400 GT" badge does not look stock. Could be from a couple of different U.S. cars?

    looks like the numbering from the old mercedes, probably took the 4 from a old 450 sel and the 00 from 500 sl, lol? you never know..

    That's exactly what I was thinking. That looks like just the numbers on my 1973 450 and my 1984 300. (Come to think of it, I have all the chrome digits necessary to write "400" myself!. . . But I won't.)

    I like the look of the 400 far better without the badging. In fact, it reminds me a bit of the "GTO," which had nothing but a small black horse and "GTO."

    I think that 308s would look better without all the 308. . . GTB (or GTS). . . "quattrovalvole. . ." et.c. Unfortunately there are holes cut in the body for the insignias, so I can't just take them off.

    Nobody should have to ask what kind of car it is, anyway.

    I believe the "400" badge came off a W124 Mercedes 400E. It would've had to be a 1992 or 1993 model, as Mercedes switched to letters first in 1994 and renamed it the E420 (plus they switched fonts). GT badge could've come from practically anywhere!

    Thursday my tech will be doing a front wheel bearing inspection and repack. This in addtion to a brake fluid flush and caliper and pad check. I would expect to machine resleeve the calipers and either making new pistons or hopefully finding replacements(any ideas guys?).

    If we machine new pistons they will be out of stainless, we will wait until we check the rears, if they are the same we will carve those out at the same time. With our CNC machines we can program and set up to produce them quickly.

    I hope to be able to have enough thickness to lightly grind the surfaces of the brake rotors. We prefer to use our Blanchard grinder to lightly kiss the surface, rather than actually machine the surface. We can get a better swirled finish with the Blanchard. I'm not sure if new rotors are avalible, anybody know of new replacement? At his point we will be replacing the brake pads as well.

    This is just the begining of bringing this 400i out of a long slumber and making ready for the road this summer. Lots of interesting challenges ahead. I do have a 1982 400i question, that being the rear shocks. While this car has 2 per side, I find no evidence of any hoses or lines to them for the ride control/self leveling system. I was under the impression that all 1982's and newer had this feature, enlighten me please.

    There is lots of discussion on reworking brakes on Tom Yang's site www.tomyang.net

    I know the old ones (250 - 330 era) are Dunlaps, I'm assuming the brakes on the 400 are made by one of the usual suspects and parts are availible.

    PS. Don't use Whitepost for the brakework - many people have had poor experiences in the past few years.

    Brake caliper's are made by 'ATE' on my 1981 400I. I think that is standard.
