About six months ago I started looking for a spare for my 308GTS since I didn't have one when I purchased the car from Gary Bobileff.

A fellow fchatter (who will remain nameless for the moment) and I PM'd each other and agreed on a price of $400 plus shipping. As the market continued to turn and my business slowed, I felt it wasn't in my best interest to purchase the wheel at that time, so within a month I told him, thank you, but go ahead and sell the wheel because I just can't pull the trigger right now.

He told me that it was already boxed and asked if there was any way I could still purchase it from him. I suggested that I pay him over time, and he agreed. About three weeks ago I finished paying him for the wheel and threw in a little more than he asked for shipping trying to be a good guy, and he sends the wheel.

It arrives looking like this. The problem I have is that two wheel shops said they cannot fix the wheel because they are concerned about the stress put on the wheel at the location of the corrosion and damage.

I then asked the fchatter to return my $400 and I would pay to ship the wheel back to him.

He refused and told me to sell the wheel on Ebay to get my money back. I wouldn't sell this wheel to anyone, and certainly not another Fchatter. He also told me that these wheels are $800 each, yet I can get an authentic one in pristine condition from the Wheel Collision Center in Bath, PA for $650!!!!

I think this is complete Bullsh!t. This is a safety issue, and if the wheel is worth $800 than why doesn't he take it back and sell it for that???

    What say you?

I say "out" the person. I would not want to buy anything from him, ever. He should have disclosed all info and allowed you to make a purchasing decision.

No I didn't ask for a photo, but any honest person should certainly have disclosed the damage and corrosion, don't you agree?

    ron,

whie that may have been prudent from the beginning, the seller should not have missed that point in the description to the buyer. the honor system must exist in this community.

in the porsche world, pelican parts has an amazing history of people using said system and on the very, very rare instance that there is an issue, the seller qickly makes good or is outed in a massive way!!!

this sale does not appear kosher.

IMO, for the amount of money involved, you have every right to expect a serviceable wheel.

    That's BS. Out the guy.

Sounds like what I heard when I bought a motor from a yard in another state. They had left it outside with no intake manifold and 4 of the bores were rusted. Guy at yard claimed that he sold it as a core and "anything is rebuildable." If that was an F-chatter I would out him. What are you worried about?

    Very decent of you, Matt.

At the very least, the wheel should have been in a safe condition upon sale and transfer. :(

Good luck for an amicable resolution for all involved.

    All the best,
    Andrew.

That's totally UNSAT! Out the guy...

I think anyone not trying to con someone in the interest of full disclosure would have given a detailed description as to the quality of the wheel. Clearly this did not happen. In this community your reputation is everything...

There is no question the person who sold you that wheel should immediately apologize, refund your money and probably pay for the shipping. He or she clearly knew it was damaged and should have never sold it for anything other than a decoration.

Man, what does that FIT? Your 308????

I have about five sets of rims from 1976 and the condition of that hub looks like it was submerged!
...a long time....has to be Katrina salvage or something, looks like it was hooked up to a battery as a lab experiment.

$400 is a lot of money these days, to most......

As an aside, I know of several sets of wheels for sale , I have bought FIVE for $500 to $800.....get your money refunded and we'll go SHOPPING!

The flange that mates to the rotor hub, as well as the centering cone are fine.

You COULD machine those corroded surfaces and effect an 'appearance' repair, but why bother?

Tha rim was damaged somehow or is a defective casting....

Thinking about it, I'll wager this rim was "stripped' at some point to refinsh and not re primed properly, that entire area was heavily coated in zinc chromate at the Factory.
You can see it's all gone in the photo (it's a funny grey/green color) and as the result electrolysis between the aluminum alloy and the steel rotor DID make a battery out of it!

    Wanker rim guys......

I saw this wheel in person. There is no way i would mount this on my Ferrari. The wheel has OBVIOUS damage which should have been initially disclosed, especially for the amount of money involved. Seller should do the honorable thing and provide a full refund.

What am i looking at ?

In today's world, it is so easy to take a pic and email it, that you NEED to ask for pictures because if the seller refuses or has an excuse, it is a bad sign.

Before you out him, sue him for fraud, then post a link to the case. Then you don't have to deal with a claim for defamation, because it will be a public record, and you'll have the litigation privilege.
