Brought my car home last night and was showing it off and my brother in law closed the engine cover like you would a normal car trunk (didn't just let it drop from 8 inches). Now the light on the dash shows the rear hatch as being open even though it's clearly closed. I've opened and closed it several times but the light won't go off. Because of this, I can't put the car in either first gear or reverse. Does anyone have any idea how to solve this problem?

Sometimes the latch button comes loose under the rear deck lid and needs to be tightened. Check this out and I think that you'll get rid of the dash light.

Unbolt the cover on the latch mechanism and see if anything is loose (wire, cable, or the latch itself).

Does the engine hood wiggle if you tug up and down on it when it is supposedly latched?

Wiggled things around in there and it is somehow fine now. Thanks for the replies.

I don't think I'd ever drop it from 8 inches, but about 3 or 4 inches used to work for me :)

where have i heard that before...

    Nice pic!

If you are driving and the car does this to you, in an emergency, you can pull back on the right "up" shift paddle and press the accelerator and the car will go into gear and drive off. It is hard on the gears, but the car will move again. If you have to stop the car will pop out of gear again and you will have to repeat to get it home.
There are a couple of things that can cause the deck lid light to come on. I would have your mechanic check the adjustment of the deck lid with respect to the latch and sensors for a good fit.
I had this issue early on after I changed out my grill. My mechanic came out on a Sunday and got the car working!! Competizione and Sports Cars, they are the best!

Definitely don't find this in a Porsche...

That said...it's all part of the wonderful ownership of these beautiful and rare machines. My 355 has had a few character-building issues and all the mild frustrations disappear when the engine starts up and that glorious song begins behind your head. ;)

Enjoy your FCar, brother...and welcome to the Brotherhood. :D

Thats not the rear hatch light you are seeing, its probably your F1 trans pump light, if its staying on its got no pressure. do you hear the pump cycle when you open the drivers dorr ?

The dash showed a picture of a car with the rear hatch open. The pump does make noise when I open the drivers door.

It's the rear hatch light on, been there, done that...Don't read too far into it. These cars are pretty much bullet proof. Minor stuff here and there but every car has that...even Toyota! No 1.8 million car recall for F~Cars...;-)

Probably the switch in the latch.
