Great shots James! Do you have these available at a higher resolution perhaps?

You're post is quite timely - not just because the event occurred recently, but also because that is one of the two McLaren F1s that wears the 'Extra High Downforce Kit' I just referred to.

Contrary to what the sign displayed with the car read, this is actually an F1 road car and not McLaren F1 LM. The car was modified extensively by McLaren prior to 2001, and one of the changes was to fit an LM-spec engine to it, but it still differs significantly from a true F1 LM.

It is chassis #018, built originally in 1994 and painted "Midnight Blue Pearl". It's first owner was in Japan. Since leaving Japan it has been in Europe for quite some time, and then prior to New Zealand it spent a couple of years in Singapore.

Thanks mate, yep, I have higher res photo's for you, send me a PM with your email address...

Your post regarding the down force kit was what reminded me to post these photo's here....

If I go to the racing tomorrow and if this car is present I will get some detail shots for you. :)

Just wanted to add these photos below of chassis #018 in its original condition. Sometimes people are surprised by just how drastically an F1 has been changed to suit a new owner's tastes.

The first two images show the car in Japan and were taken in 1995 and 1996 when owned by Yoshio Tsuzuki. The next pair of shots show the car in 1999 and were taken in Oslo, Norway, apparently at the Oslo Motor Show when it belonged to Tom Bryant-Meissner.

I really liked this car in its original form. It's far more exciting now, of course; but the deep blue is quite appealing and there's nothing outrageous going on in the interior, so it seems to have been well spec'd out originally.

Chassis 18, as James just posted pics of, is my favorite F1. Its the combination of the interior colors with the exterior color, the Extra High Downforce package, etc. LOVE it!

drPhibes shared them in the F1 forum about 6 years ago, and they are still active as of just the other day. Look for a thread created by him for the originals of those two shots, and one more I didn't clean up and resize to include here.

There was also this one below, which I had hosted in that thread, but it was from my old ClubPhoto.com account and died when their website went away.

That's chassis #014, and would always enjoy seeing more pics of it.

There's a fantastic gallery of shots from a few years back of that car - over 50 images - here:

NO! ;)

Honestly, the SLR project is what drove Gordon Murray out the door at McLaren. He said very clearly that McLaren Cars had become a company that was not what he envisioned when he started it and he could no longer work in a group-think, bean counter-controlled environment like that.

While the SLR is an exceptional performance car in its own right, I don't think we want to discuss it in this thread, nor do I believe that history will look on it nearly as favorably as the F1.

What about the only other true McLaren roadcar, the 1969 M6GT? :D I only wish they'd gone into actual production...

I think what Peleton meant to say is: F*^% NO!
One of the biggest mistakes McLaren has made. The new McLaren will be a mistake too. Doesn't look right.

LOL... :D

Did you get to see the new one in person yet Scott? I have chatted with two people who've been fortunate to see the finished styling prototype in Woking and they came away more impressed by the design than they expected to be.

I also suspect, based on the weight and power figures McLaren have posted, that it will be a very competitive car. I think it is going to come down to price, and the dealer network to sell and support the cars which is a very big hurdle they need to overcome around the world for it to be successful.

My dad was involved in building a replica M6 some time ago, I think I was around 11 or 12 at the time and I was fortunate to go for a ride in it, Interesting car.

No I haven't seen it.

I agree about the big hurdles. I think it is questionable if they can be overcome.

awesome - although in one shot, looks like the mirror of the F1 has paint issues (right side mirror)
