Gearbox compatibility

Need a 6th gear?

 

My 81 2V GTSi has a QV gearbox fitted ........ the difference is I need a QV speedo now .... the older speedo will (and does) read double.

.....also I have heard some (many / most) QV's had an oil cooler for the transmission ..... ????? ..... is this right ??? ........mine has no oil cooler for the transmission so I have yet to explore what if anything was done to eliminate it ......

The indicated speed is determined by impulses from the 'speedometer pulse generator' which plugs into the gearbox diff & housing - Table 20 item 76.

According to Ricambi, both 2V and QV use the same generator. Pictures of both are same as are part numbers - p/n 116987

OK, I've checked at Ricambi verify me elsewhere. Unless you haven't seated the generator fully. That's happened too.

Are the gear ratio the same for all QV's?

 

The later 308 gearboxes, that use the electronic speedometer sender 116987, have an internal oil pump (not an oil cooler) so perhaps that is the difference that you have heard mentioned. I'm having a vague recollection that the introduction of the electronic sender was done later on the US 308i/QV cars (unlike the euro 308i/QV where both use the electronic sender as the other Paul mentioned -- the Ricambi 308i/308QV SPC only show the euro versions) -- did/does you "old" 308i-2V gearbox use the vertical mechanical speedometer sender like this?

I would doubt it. The 308 carbed cars have countless forward gear ratio options depending on market even if the final drives are the same. This would make a big difference with the seat of the pants feel and ET's.

 

See page E7 in the 308QV/328 WSM:

1. the US and euro version 308QV have the same gear ratios inside the gearbox, while the CH (Swiss) verison are different,

2. All three versions (euro, US, CH) have the same transfer gear ratio,

3. All three versions (euro, US, and CH) have different differential gear ratios,

resulting in slightly different overall gear ratios (in all gears) for the three different versions.

 

Many gear ratios were available.
For Ex. the 1981-82 Mondial had taller 1,2 gears so you were not shifting all the time,,, like in the 308s'
And, the Swiss 308 Trannys' had the best ratios, for the tall hills.

 

The sender that mounts on the top (pre 2V FI except mine) and the the sender that mounts on the bottom FI 2V and QV are different.

I have a speedo for the FI 2v and the QV but it is in MPH I got it to replace my 85 MPH
and had it serviced but it turnd out to be for the Sender that mounts on the bottom
2V FI and QV (except mine).

You can NOT mix the the Speedos and senders.

Experience is the best teacher, but carries the higher cost.

Ricambi has changed/corrected the bottom link image (I saved the original yesterday and it is different now) and has now posted the correct one showing the bottom sensor. Me thinks they had used the 1983 QV which is different than later QVs. Thanks all for the clarification.

I would agree the sensor and readout need pairing but think PaloAlto Speedometer could do the pairing once the bottom sensor was obtained.

 

Hi Steve , , Although I didnt have anything to do with the gearbox swap in my car I can say all the 2Vi's I have seen have the same gearbox as the top photo you posted ...and my car has the later gearbox as in the lower photo. , , the wires all connect up nicely but the speedo shows double reality .... I should video it before I get a QV speedo because it looks quite impressive as I pass 150mph and am still accelerating strongly !

Thanks for the information clarifying my oil pump vs oil cooler confusion. I guess with some considerable modification a QV gearbox could be fitted with an oil cooler , at least there is a pump in there to move oil around.

So to answer the original thread question, yes QV and 2V gearboxes swap over apparently very easily .......... I guess if a Mondial or GT4 use the same gearboxes then they will be swappable models too.

 

I was thinking the same thing -- you could post a photo with the needle at 200mph -- fastest 308 on Earth! Thanks for the feedback, but, based on your location, I'm a little surprised that you say all 2Vi have had the top mount speedometer sender since the euro 308i-2V SPC does show only the bottommount style -- can anyone with an unmodified euro 308i-2V confirm they do have the bottommount style speedometer sender?

 

Does anyone know if the 355 gearbox will fit a Mondial t? And if, so, what modifications need to be made to it and the speedometer?

That looks like half the 355 bolted into the 308 shell. I've been pondering something like that for quite a while.

 

Thats not just an engine !! Twin turbos !! .......AND the chassis / suspension mods .....WOW , I love it !! Show us more please , what happened with the brakes and front end ??

 

Good point on the Euro versus other models sender types Steve .... In Australia we tend to see all sorts of cars, Euros , Australian delivered and US imports and I have to admit I did look at a couple of USA imports with the old style sender unit on the top.

I'll try to get video of my 200mph 308 at some time ............. the faulty set up actually makes it very easy to judge your speed if you can divide by 2 quickly , , , over or under speed is magnified by 2.
