First, let me say I think the 206GT and 246GT Dinos are the most perfectly styled cars to ever be penned. They are simply beautiful. In fact, they may be the most beautiful man-made object, period. Still... Is there any element that seems... a little less than perfect? For me, I'm not sure if the 6 rectangular slots on the front hood were the best solution to whatever problem necessitated them. There, said it, now I'm ducking and covering.
I think it's about perfect, but only with the covered headlights. With the headlights uncovered, it looks like something is missing.
Ugh I HATE covered headlights. Whenever I see someone add them, I just shake my head. It ruins the lines and reflections in the negative shapes of the scoop. Yes, there is a problem (more on the 246 than 206). The tail is a bit too long and the rear 3/4 view can look a bit awkward at times. The Euro models look better because they are without the DOT side markers and they have the flush "white" front indicator lights that blend in better to the hood. Also I like the yellow indicator lights in the rear instead both being red. And, the spider version C pillar is too thick. The coupes look much lighter. It may have flaws but as cars go, it is one of the nicest things ever put on the road.
Well, you asked! The 206 has better proportions. If that is so, the 246 has some flaws. Each to their own though! i liked mine enough to keep it 15 years. OH! And I really dislike "chairs and flairs" -- especially fake ones. Oh, oh! I really hate it when people add Ferrari plaques and prancing horses on the tail!!! And if I ever see a Ferrari shield sticker on the front fender, I'll puke.
Speaking of the proportion differences between the 206 and 246: AFAIK, the engine and tranny are the same size; I have always wondered why the 246 was made longer with 7 vent holes vs six?
This has nothing to do with the Dino's appearance. I agree with Uro Trash. My experience has been that the Dino often does not look very good in photos. Like most cars, the lower the angle of the shot, the better. But, for some reason, I have taken and seen many unflattering Dino photos. Only the best professional photographers should be allowed near them! Fred
I think it's about perfect, but only without the covered headlights. With the headlights covered, it looks like something has been added...
I´m sorry, but it is definitely the other way around. Pininfarina has designed the Dino WITH covered headlights. It is easy to see on the prototype BERLINETTA GT which is for me the perfect shape. The front lights look like cutted out from the shape of the fenders which is less worse with the covers. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Heresy to entertain the very thought of anything out of sorts about either 206 or 246, and blasphemy to speak of such notions.
As much as I love this prototype, it has many different details from the production version. Yes, the rear end is rounded off or droopy and doesn't look as good as the kamm style tail. The front doesn't have the same roundness of the front wheel arches. The scoupe details are cool, but the rear roofline is much lomger - not neccessarily bad, but different. The headlight covers are gone due to "new guidelines" in "covered lights" as I have always heard. Can't verify that, but I like the light covers. The 275 GTB looks awesome and I would love to have that look, but I am not going to add them. I think the 246 coupe is the best design of the lot. It flows, looks symetrical and is amazing. The 206, although an amazing car, lacks on the interior. Not saying I would buy a 246 over a 206 on this factor, but when I was buying, 206's were typically crap. I wished I had one. But the 206 doesn't look as cool to me as the 246 gt. I would love to see dimensionally the difference between this prototype and the production 206.
+1 I will never understand why some like the amaturish looking "chairs and flairs" ... just horrible. Pete
Were they more affordable, I'D HAVE ONE.... LOVE Dinos ... having seen many in person (ok - about 6 or 7) I LOVE THEM. Inside and out. No complaints. And I have space for one should one arrive as a gift! So I guess the price is thing I really don't care for Jedi
Interior air vents Air enters through front vents, through trunk, around tire and all into and out of vents by door jamb, doesn't it?
The headlight covers were factory option in some countries as you can see on my list posted in the fog light thread. I can´t tell the numbers but for sure not none.. But hey, we are discussing indivudual preferences nothing else. The only thing that counts is that everbody likes HIS car ;-)
As I understand it, the headlight covers were a Factory option in the UK market only. That explains why so many Dinos in the UK seem to have covered headlights. Does anybody know if they were listed as a factory option in any other country in the world? I am not aware of one. I also believe the Dino was designed with covered headlight from the beginning, just as Dino Club Germany says. After all, Pininfarina made the Alfa Romeo Duetto with similar covered headlights only one or two years earlier. The Duetto was forced to lose its headlight covers in the US after 1968, since the DOT would not allow them. For the same reason, I imagine, the headlight covers on the Dino were never offered in the US market. A pity, I think, but our well meaning but misguided politicians thought they were protecting us with their new government regulations for automobile design. Perhaps they thought that too much beauty is not good for us
