I'm somewhat surprised nobody has reported this yet since I read it a couple days ago: While Ferrari allegedly was serious about having him as 3rd driver in a 3rd car, he himself decided that F1 wasn't for him and he publicly stated so.

    http://www.speedweek.ch/news/9829/Rossi-und-F1-Eher-nicht.html

Er sagt: «Ich hatte einen guten Test. Und es hat viel Spass gemacht, aber ich denke es wird sehr schwierig, in die Formel 1 zu kommen.»

    Translation:
He said: I had a good test. And it was a lot of fun, but I think it'd be difficult to get into F1.

So much for all the hype about him joining F1.

Oh, another candidate for a beer bet. Great!

Massa will follow the path of Alboreto/Johannson/Arnoux/Irvine and become a non entity after his Ferrari years. An also run who will end his career with no WDC to his name. In ten years he'll be hanging around at Goodwood and a few fans from Brazil will recognize him and ask for an autograph.

You don't have to win a WDC to be great though. Ferrari's greatest ever driver never won one! (I'll give you a clue: He came from Canada! ;) ).

    Let me rephrase that:

You don't have to win a WDC to be great though, but you should have had the chance to.

Gilles could have won the title in 1979 if he wanted to as he was in striking distance behind Sheckter and faster at that time. But being the (last?) gentleman that he was, he stayed with their agreement and let Jody have the win and title.

Same can be said about Stirling Moss vs Fangio.

Stirling and Gilles could have been WDCs if they wanted to. That makes them WDCs in my mind. Which is not be confused with drivers who wanted to be WDC but fell short pointswise despite trying their hardest <cough Ma-cough-ssa>.

PS: Interestingly Moss never became a WDC thereafter for the same reason Gilles did. Career ending accident.

You hit the nail on the head on why a G. Villeneuve and a Moss are head and shoulders in terms of Drivers than a Damon Hill or Jenson Button will ever be.

Absolutely, I agree totally. Another interesting thing related to Moss, he was interviewed on TV when ITV used to have the F1 coverage and they asked him his thoughts on Schumachers aggresive style on track when it came to rivals.

I suspect they were expecting him to criticise it and say something along the lines of: "It's not the decent thing to do!", but what he actually said was:

"To win the World Championship these days you have to be a bit of a bas*ard on track to your rivals. It's possible to win the occasional Championship without being a bas*ard, but if you want to be really successful, like Senna and Schumacher, that's the way you have to be these days, it's such big business that you can't afford the luxury of being a Gentleman anymore. I know that if I'd have been a bas*ard back when I was racing, I would have won at least one World Championship, maybe more, but it was never in my nature".

In those days the drivers had to be gentlemen in order to survive: If somebody would have attempted the deliberate collisions Schumacher did to Hill or Villeneuve, chances are they would have all been killed on the spot.

Indeed, it was interesting though to note that rather than being disgusted by the methods used by Senna and Schumacher (as ITV were expecting), he could actually see that times had changed and that this the way of racing these days. He did say that if drivers tried that style of driving when he was racing, they wouldn't have lived very long.

I think his comments about if he'd been more of a bas*ard in his day, was more about being more forceful and defensive on track within the safety limits of the day, and maybe not so honest off track. After all, if he'd not been so honest about Hawthorn pushing his car at Porto in 1958 he would have probably been the World Champion that year.

I think Rossi is the greatest Non-Driver to never make it to F1.
He'll be back when news is slow and Ferrari needs some more PR.
    I cant wait.
