I recently purchased a 2000 Porsche 996 C2 and ,before my purchase, had a PPI done at a Porsche dealer. The inspection was done by a guy who worked at the dealership for 20+ years (per the service manager) and was described as a 120+ point inspection which cost me $250. Today I changed the cabin filter and the air cleaner. Upon removing the air filter, I was shocked to find what's in the pic below. The entire air box was filled with dead leaves. I'm actually embarassed to post this, but I'm pretty pissed that this was missed in the PPI. The inspector checked that the air filter and cabin filter did not pass inspection on the inspection folder I received. When I talked with him after the inspection, he advised it was because they were dirty. He didn't say a word about the entire tree that apparently died and was buried in my airbox! The area to the right of the leaves was also full of leaves but I had started to shopvac them out when I decided I better take a pic.

This is my first PPI, so I'm not sure if this is normal that this was not checked and found. What do you guys think?

    Holy crap...

It's like the fire department coming over to your house, reporting that it's on fire, and leaving.

Ironically enough, the car was previously owned by a fireman. Seriously!

The tech didn't remove the filter, he just saw it was dirty and put the lid back on. Not an easy call to blame the tech.
Besides, the filter did its job, it kept those leaves from being ingested!

Think about it - 120 point inspection for $250. For what you paid you got at most 2 hours of work from a Porsche tech. So that works out to be 1 minute of time per inspection point. Your expectations and the math just don't work.

Pay him another $300 to detail the car, and get pissed if the car doesn't come back clean. Otherwise, what do you expect? He told you it was not clean, and it wasn't. Just like he said, and just like you paid him to check.

He was paid to INSPECT, that's what he did. A forensic examination, that would have revealed hidden areas/pockets of dirt, debris and grime, would cost you a LOT more.

Besides, there's no harm done. Move on.

There's no need to get pissy with me. It was a simple question about what people think a PPI should have revealed and, as stated, I had never done one before. It was about educating myself for the next time and what I can expect. I never complained about the cost and never have. I don't need to move on because I never stopped after cleaning out the leaves and putting in the new filter.

If he saw the leaves at all, he should have noted it in the inspection report, not just that the filter was dirty. I think it is something that a potential purchaser would want to know (as it may indicate that the car was not garaged as advertised or that it was not enthusiast owned).

As previous posts state, he likely did not even see the leaves there. Which means that your inspection $ did not go as far as you thought it would or should. And I agree.

Whenever I see that a particular service is a 120 (or whatever) point inspection, that means nothing to me. What it means is that a particular item is merely looked at rather than a bona fide evaluation to check and make sure everything is ok. It's kind of like putting sun visors on the included standard features. DUH. These days, people simply don't take pride in their work. Most people just go through the motions of the j o b.

Did you buy the car from a dealer or privately? The service tech probably didnt want to clean the leaves since it was only in for a PPI and it was not your car yet. If you bought the car from a dealer, I would have expected the car box to be clean. Just my .02 cents.
