CAR...the euro mag does an article on the 2012 M5..

this one is going to be a beauty..
    578 HP 4.4 TT V8
    Body beautiful
    30% better fuel enconomy
    Shuts down at stoplights..
    Double automated clutch.
should break 4 sec. to 60 barrier

    Cant wait!
    _________________________________________________________________________________

Two turbos, eight cylinders, 578 HP, 530 lb-ft of torque, 0-to-60 in 4.4 seconds and 188 MPH top speed. That's what England's Car magazine says to expect from the 2012 BMW M5. We're just happy it's not another SUV.

The new M5 will be based on the new F10 2011 BM 5-series, with motivation coming courtesy of a more powerful version of the BMW X6M's twin-turbo V8 engine.

That's the end of the good news, Car says not to expect a wagon variant (we guess there's always the X5 M for dog owners) and that the new M5 will likely be equipped with Efficient Dynamics technology to reduce emissions levels by 30 percent. Like the M3, that probably means things like regenerative braking that will increase both complication and weight. [Car]

This will be an amazing car, but a BMW + TT will never sit well with me.

    Get with it...

Big HP is associated with larger displacement
Larger displacement is associated with poorer Gas mileage
The sands of the hour glass are now waning on fossil oil supplies,
The world must conserve as per political correctness...

    Whats left to do..

    Blow it Baby ...with twins

    ...More power to BMW..

Porsche was king until the others caught on

Something about a regenerative device will be placed inbetween engine and tranny..

    Future is coming at ya!

Actually, that's more good news. The 5 wagon is hideous.

And reduced emissions is good for people who breathe. I hear you about the complication, but modern cars are insanely complex already. With 578 bhp, we're already talking about a sedan that runs with Ferrari 360/F430s.

I posted in the other 5 thread, but this is a good looking car, a vast improvement over the current mess.

if the car looks like that I'll be quite pleased. V8 TT seems kind of off but hey if the car is fast and the power delivery is linear I'll be all for it. interesting to see what type of aftermarket power bump is available too.

I would agree with you, but only up until about a year ago.

The new Z4 is a fantastic car -- finally saw one in the metal last week. It's the only good-looking retractable metal roof convertible on the market, and it looks stunning.

And this new 5 series is much better than the new 7, or the current 3. It's not a hall of fame, all-time-best-looking-cars list contender, but it's pretty damned good, IMHO.

If i remember correctly, they offered a manual on the current model when there was an uproar after intially being offered without one, but then nobody bought the manual. So im not sure they would offer one on this model

There is some type of fallacy about turbocharging being more fuel efficient. In an epa or euro test it is more efficient because the power is not being used so you have a smaller motor less friction and some efficiency gain. Use the performance go into turbo boost and power uses fuel, possibly more so than in a NA engine of similar power. A subaru wrx has lousy fuel economy when driven hard ditto the evo. It is true that with a turbo one could run a smaller therefore lighter engine reducing entire vehicle weight and gaining some performance/efficiency that way. But I doubt the new m5 is going to be any lighter than the old.

What we have here is probably a significantly cheaper to produce engine than the bespoke v10. a turbo motor which will probably get better fuel economy in a theoretical epa cycle but in reality will use much the same and probably more when driven hard. Turbos are gimicks to get through fuel economy tests and produce power out of more pedestrian powerplants.

In a wrx you can have a light car with lots of power, so its nimble and realtively cheap if not fuel efficient compared to say a vette or mustang. I would be happy to be wrong but it seems the m division is selling out its core attributes. Should still be a fast fun car though, just not necessarily better.

Thge new dual clutchtransmission is for better or worse the future, the 458 also has no other option.

That rendering does look nice. I guess they are realizing its time to stop the BS. The 5er GT is an abomination on wheels.

Hmmmm...all that power and it'll still get smoked by a CTS-V.

I don't know what it is about BMW drivers lately, but they all seem to act like complete knobs in traffic.

I like the new 5, have no use for the M5, but I am considering the 550 since it still comes with a stick. I need a sedan, I'm getting older, and so are my twins.

The last 5 series was vile looking

The E39 series M5 was the last real M5 IMO.
