Nice day today for an RS and F40 drive. Keep the F40 revs over 6K and it does just fine. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Beautiful day in SoCal! I'm about to head out on a motorcycle ride myself. Wish I had an F40 instead!
Been a very long time since I have seen an F40 with that much brake dust on the front wheels. Looks like you are using it well! >8^) ER
How does the old girl do against all that modern tech? I'm asking because I'm assuming you were putting her through the paces fairly well by the amount of brake dust on the wheels that Erik mentioned...
Great pics!! Looks very nice and sunny there. Currently raining here today. Was going to take a freinds young fella for a drive today on his 13th birthday, but his Dad just called me and told me not to worry about it because of the rain etc..etc. I said are you SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUURE???????? I will drive it in the rain, that is no problem. Its not going to melt or anything. But he said no thanks, next time when its not raining.
It becomes more fun as you learn about it. We just got back from a night drive. If you keep the revs up the power is good and the turbo lag is much shorter. Brakes are OK once you get used to them, and so is the shifter and the steering. It's noticeably faster than the GT3 RS in a straight line. In the curves, the RS is easier to drive faster because there is less body flex for better road feel and the steering, brakes and acceleration are instant with no waiting. But unless you're on a track, the F40 will stay with the RS OK. One big difference - the RS brakes will make your eyes pop out. You're not going to get that with the F40. Other than that, the RS (and CS) feel pretty much as raw as the F40 since there's not much electronics saving your butt in those cars. The sounds the F40 makes coming in and out of boost are pretty entertaining. I think that's one of the things I enjoy most about the F40. It's amazing how much the sound of a car adds to the driving pleasure, at least for me.
We stopped after a long straight and a boy and his little brother came running down the hill. The brother, probably about 10 or 11, said he heard me coming down the straight (7,000+ rpm!) and knew it was a Ferrari. I guess he runs down the hill all the time to see the cars go by when he hears them coming. He almost had a heart attack that an F40 and RS actually stopped in front of his house! That never happened before! That's why his older brother joined him this time. We talked for a bit and gave them a good show when we left. Too bad I didn't think to offer them a ride. Maybe next time I see them.
Hmm...thanks for the reflections. And ya...nothing quite like the character of an old turbo'd car...shame that they engineer those sounds (for the most part) out of modern turbocharged sports cars.
That you would even think to do it now definitely makes you a good guy. I've spent the last two decades drooling over cars like your F40, but wasn't offered a ride in any of them until one instance about 5 years ago. >8^) ER
Bill, really great post! You can be sure hearing and seeing the F40 would have left a big impression on those kids. I remember not too long ago as a 16 year youth seeing an F40 in person for the first time, hearing the rush of turbos. In pictures the F40 looks fantastic but in person its just much more jaw dropping. I asked the owner what he thought of the car and this was his reply "Its a fantastic car every man should one" There many be faster Ferrari's but few have the drama of an F40. Thanks again for sharing your supercar experiences with us.
People like you and your friend are the reason I love this community so much. You didn't have to stop and talk to those kids, but because you did, he will love Ferrari's forever, and will always think good things about them. He will never forget those couple minutes just standing next to your F40 and talking with you. I love hearing stories like this, thanks.
I'm jealous of those kids! I still haven't seen one in person yet, let alone hear one at full throttle like that
