Got my Half Shafts Off Today!

My wife won't let me even change the cover plate on a light switch for fear of the house burning down. Yet thanks to the wealth of info and experience in these forums, I removed both of the half shafts off of a Ferrari. It took me 1.5 hours start to finish so I don't think I'll be getting hired by Eugenio any time soon. A couple of questions. 1: Does anyone know the torque specs for the CV bolts? I looked all throughout the threads and could not find this info. 2: In picture #2 of the CV bolt, there is a flat washer on it. Some of the bolts had washers and some didn't. I bought all new CV nuts and bolts. No washers came with the kit. Do the bolts need washers? Yes? No?

THANKS! That is exactly where they were. See what I mean about this site. I probably would of just put the new bolts on the way they came without washers and shredded everything. Scary. Thanks again

 

The hose clamp must of been put there by the PO. (Or his mechanic) That is how it came off of the car. It was not interfering at all with the rotation of the axle.

Do you know the best kind of clamps to use? The other type that are on my axles (band) slide off easily by hand.

Yes. That is the main reason for removing them. The boots were split and cracked.

Thanks. The inners were very easy. Only about 10 minutes each side. The outers were a PITA. I thought it would be the opposite. It would of gone much faster if I had an air ratchet or a stubby socket wrench. I am going to buy one or the other before I put them back on the car.

 

Could not agree more. Snap On are my favorite. Tell Tippy Hello for me. He was one of my big inspirations for trying to work on my car myself. I figured if Tippy wasn't afraid to take a Ferrari apart, then neither was I. (actually I am a little nervous)

 

Yikes!!... On my first attempt to loosen the bolts, they would not budge. Not even with a monster breaker bar. So I sprayed all the nuts with Sea Foam Deep Creep and let them soak over night. All the nuts broke very easily after that. Did not even need a cheater bar. After breaking the nut, I could literally spin it off with just my fingers. There is nothing better on Earth for loosening frozen or rusted on nuts or bolts. Deep Creep has never let me down. Normally you can remove the most frozen nut or bolt within 15 to 30 minutes after spraying it with Deep Creep.

 

I can't wait to have the challenge behind me!! All of my nuts ands bolts are in very good shape as you can see in picture #2. I am still going to replace them with all new hardware that I got from T. Rutlands. $200.00 for all 24 nuts and bolts. I was quoted $500.00 labor to remove and replace my CV boots. Thats with me supplying the boots, bands, and bolts.
Tool Shack has some really great stuff to remove rounded out hex bolts and screws. I forgot what it is called offhand. It is a liquid impregnated with industrial diamond dust. Just put some in the rounded out area, insert the hex key, and presto, the strength of the diamond material creates a hard surface between the rounded out area and tool allowing its removal. Great stuff. I used to work on planes and used it all the time to remove rounded out screws and corroded bolts. Worked great on rounded out nuts too.

About 15 terry cloth rags, Car Quest parts dip, and a pneumatic air nozzle. That is for only one axle. I am doing one axle at a time. I am leaving one assembled so I can use it as a reference just in case. It is exactly as everyone warned. MESSY! Also cleaning up under the car and within the engine bay where grease was thrown is very time consuming. Other than the mess, it is not that difficult of a job. It could easily be done in two days. (Only because I let the CV's soak overnight in parts dip). It is taking me longer because my work got busy and my spare time is very limited. Thanks for the compliment. Sharing the photos and hearing other FChatters thoughts are what makes it worthwhile. I wish I would not of sold my parts washer. That would be really nice to have right now.
