Thanks. Seeing that after watching this weekend's race at Daytona I'm struck by just how ugly the cars have become. Don't get me wrong the racing is still great but I just can't connect with the cars on the same visceral level.
I was working in the pits at Bridge Hampton when everyone got very quiet. I noticed people were stopping turning and staring at the sand dune that paralleled pit row. Riding over the dune was a beautiful white wing. A white pickup towing a white car on an open trailer pulled into the pits. The driver had a cowboy hat. The car had a wing mounted on struts. One by one we began to realise that we'd seen the future and everything sitting in the pits had become obsolete. If Jim had used a regular gearbox it would have been game over.
Compare this photo with the recent Daytona lineup makes you realize why these cars are so beloved, and the Dp's will be a footnote in history. Mark P.S.: Two white cars in the photo! I missed the second the first time I reviewed it!
Great story - thanks for the memory. I got a chance to see the Chaparral racers at the Monterey Historics in 2005 - quite a sight having all those cars together. >8^) ER

It is 0856 so it isn't 0846. I know it sounds stupid. In some way owner David A. Clarke gave her the Daytona winner outfit back in those days. You can simply tell a 330 P4 from a 330 P3/4 by comparing the shutlines of the engine cover behind the doors. On the 330 P3/4 these are in line with the shutlines of the doors. It's a structural difference.
It wasn't David. It was Ferrari who painted 0856 in 0846's livery and sold her that way. See the last pages of the 0846 thread. Best
