When the mail came this afternoon I was a bit surprised that I'm being billed $260.00 for $10.00 in toll fees. I don't have a toll tag but use this zip cash method & pay when I get a statement in the mail, in fact I just paid one last week for $26.00. I thought about getting a tag to save $$ when traveling on Texas toll roads.

I called the NTTA to get an understanding of the "fines" I have accrued got a scripted answer that I used the Dallas North Tollway & didn't pay at the booths. I thought it would just send me a statement in the mail like the it had been since Summer of 2009. I've never had this billing problem before until now. Rather than paying the full amount, my option is to pay $92.50 to clear it. If not paid by March 23rd, I'm turned over to a collection agency if not worse DPS will issue a warrant for my arrest. What the Hell is going on? Isn't this illegal financial terrorism, is there anyway to fight this without getting an attorney involved?

Its all programmed theft--from extra "fees" on the toll roads (in our case since we live in major city without toll roads, we don't have toll tags so we always get hammered in D), or at banks or by local towns charging $2k to clear a bogus MIP so you can avoid $10k in legal fees to fight it.

Sadly, expect as long as Perry is in charge, toll roads are the way his cronies/hwy construction lobby gets paid.

Only some of the toll roads are "we bill you" - that is called "ZIP" Cash.
The Bush, 121, the Addison Airport tunnel and the bridges over Lake Lewisville and Mountain Creek Lake are all ZIP Cash tolls (we bill you off your license plate). They have the overhead readers and cameras.

Seems only the DNT still has booths to collect the money. See www.ntta.org/AboutUs/TollRates/ for more.

    Hope this helps.

What really bothers me about this whole mess is I've been getting fined as far back as May of 2009 & never received notice of this, I just went out my business paying for use of the "Zip" cash billing system. Since the system went cashless on George Bush & thought the same for the Dallas North Tollway. NTTA said to me they don't bill the same but it shows up with the same billing name & contact address.

After numerous searches, I've seen much worse cases & I'm sure most here know what I'm talking about. People with tags getting fined thousands of dollars without any notice or contact. .40 toll fee plus a $25.00 administration fee? If I have to pay the damn thing so be it, I'll just need to go pay in person at the NTTA offices all in pennies.

More information can be found here.

Will, this is easily solved. Call and offer to sign up for the tolltag if the'll waive admin fees. If that doesn't work I will eat my hat.

    Yep. That's what I did with the Fcar. $400 bill became $40 + ~$5

Back in 2007 I used the George Bush to get to McKinney to hold a training class. I passed through four toll plazas that record the license number and bill off it. I expected to receive the bill in the mail as before and pay it when it arrived. As time went on I completely forgot about it since I never received anything from NTTA. I had paid one toll earlier in 2007 after rreceiving the bill as I thought this would do.

Fast forward to 2009. I get a bill from NTTA advising me that because I was "refusing their efforts ot contact me" they were being forced to take additional measures. Now they increased the toll, admin fees, late fees and fines to $250 per toll plaza passed through. This comes to $1000 for $3 worth of toll usage. Having never having received the bill for this use I had totally forgotten about it until this notice arrived.

Excuse me but $1000 for a $3 usage is RAPE. It is outrageous, very unethical and as far as I am concerned, criminal. Yes, I did not pay it and I would pay a $25 to $50 admin and late fee. I do not know why I did not receive the bill but I did not. Had I received it I would have paid it then.

I feel for you Will. I think I am going to go to them to check out the possibility of a toll tag also if they will wave the fees. I will let you know how it turns out.......

As I said, credit Slick Rick Perry and his boffo bufoons running TXDot for the situation. If they had their way, every city would be required to build all new (and refurbish old) main road/freeways as Tollways with authorities like NTTA.

My husband remembers when I-30 was a toll road. He said it was about 5 years AFTER it was paid off before they ended the tolls and removed the toll booths.

He said the new toll roads will be toll roads forever.

Thanks for the advice, I had the $250 in fees waved & only had to pay $10, best thing to do if you have issues with NTTA is go in there wanting to work something out without being a jackass about it. There was a line almost out the door & the clerks were extremely short handed with lots of pissed off customers, seeing that makes me glad I left customer service. All they want to do is get some type of payment, keep the line moving, & have the intention of getting a tag (which I did).

Lucky me, I got another notice in the mail today for Oct / Nov fines after I was told I didn't owe anything more. $500 this time, odd that it wasn't on the previous invoice I got two week ago. Well, back out the main office to sort this out.

The other one to be careful with is making sure you don't use your tag for a vehicle other than what it is registered. They tried to fine me for that a few years back when I took my tag into someone else's car. The tolls were paid mind you.
