When I got the car (82 308i) it had been completely de-smogged, including gutted cats, and most of the air pump plumbing removed. I have replaced all the air pump plumbing, and other stuff, and cats. The EGR, PCV (blowby) and fuel vapor recovery plumbing was mostly still in place, so I left all that alone. Any reason why I should not leave the other 3 sytems alone ? They should pass the visual test, and I don't think thay interact in any way with the exhaust smog control systems, and won't show up on the sniffer test in any way. The plumbing is somewhat brittle so I am inclined to leave well enought alone, until I pass the smog test. TIA for your opinions.
Ah...CA...what an effing PIA state this is. You may have to have your mechanic "lean out" your fuel mixture on your FI; mine does this and then re-calibrates once the effing smog test BS is passed. Additionally, not sure by your post as to whether or not all your "original" smog equipment is now in place? If not...uh oh.
Just get it really hot-spirited run prior to testing and have it tested. Sounds like visual inspection will pass no problems. So try it out and see what happens. Doesn't pass, make some changes and try again. I've passed early 80's euro mercedes without the airpump being hooked up. Good running car should make it happen. Good luck. Jeff
My experience with 308 injected fuel systems. The engine has to be in top operating condition, good plugs, good ignition wires and connectors. It will need all of the emissions equipment especially the CATS, it will not pass without good operating CATS. It will then need to be leaned out to the point that the engine barely runs and then recalibrate when the test is completed. Unless you have good electronic measuring equipment this is best left to the professionals. I would suggest that you take the car to your Ferrari mechanic and have his do the tweaking-the smog test and the recalibrating. I have tried this method with my older snap-on equipment and have failed to accomplish the the results necessary. It is a fine line to pass or not pass. Good luck, cheers kdl
See you if you can do a pre-test first before doing the actual test, the last thing you want is have your Ferrari labeled as gross polluter.
