I'm just starting to get into collecting 1:64 hot wheels/matchboxes. Have no real interest in getting all the variations or keeping them on the card. Rather just for my own display. Blown away by everything that's available!

Thought it would be neat to collect each base model of F-car just so I can ogle. Going to be tough keeping myself from not going off the deep end. ;)

Also thought I might try something. I'd like to collect a representation of every car I've ever owned over the years, if possible even try and match the color. Its easy to find the new, fancy cars I own these days, but I'm talking about everything as a tribute to all my old cars. Would be an interesting personal bit of history for me.

So... question: anybody else done this successfully? How hard will it be to find run of the mill models of cars in 1:64 scale? We are talking everything from a Datsun 610, Dodge Ram 50, etc etc etc. From minor looking on ebay I've found a lot of my odd-ball sports cars so that part will be easy, but will I end up starting a project that just can't be completed?

Also, purely out of curiosity, what is the most you've spent on any one car?
So far I've only gotten my handful of cars off of fleabay and suspect I'm paying "top dollar" on some (most) of them.

Yeah. You can complete a "set", but a "collection" is never complete.

I went hunting this evening over to Wally mart but didn't find anything of interest, I did however went by the local TRU & found a MB Porsche 914 in green, the also had the HW speed machines but most of them don't look good to me.

But the collection I'm talking about WOULD have a completion point thus my question.
Am I going to find it impossible to locate run-of-the-mill models of 1:64 cars?

Also, still wondering what some of you guys are paying for individual cars?

It all depends on if the cars you owned have actually been made in 1:64.
As far as what we pay, it really depends on what you are willing to pay.

There is always something more to get.

Cost depends on the car. Hot Wheels main line is 97¢ at Walmart, 74¢ occasionally when they put them on sale. Hot Wheels' Speed Machines and Ferrari Racers series are a buck or two more. Matchbox seems to be the best chance for "run of the mill" cars, those are also 97¢ for the main line at Walmart, with their special series cars being a little more.

To find out if Hot Wheels has ever made a certain car, try SouthTexasDiecast. Scroll to the bottom and check the Mainline Casting Identification List for Hot Wheels cars from 1968 through 2004 and then scroll up and go through the Collector Number listings for 2004 through 2010.

Does anyone have a Valentine's Day Daytona convertible they can spare?

I have some Ferraris I can trade or I'll buy it outright if reasonable...LMK

I have been thru all of the stores I could go to here in Hawaii ( Target, Toys R Us, Wal-Mart, K-Mart, Price Buster, Walgreens, Longs drug store, Navy Exchange, Toys N Joys die cast store, 7-11, etc..) I cannot find this damn Red Scuderia. I cannot find the Hotwheels Ferrari Racers either. I believed the toy associate employee gets them first before they put them all out at the shelves. SUCKS!!!

Have you checked your local Toys R' Us for the Ferrari Racer's? That's probably your best bet, as the only place in my state I have ever seen them is TRU. Good luck!

Have you found the yellow F430 Challenge yet? I found one and picked it up. No red Scud yet though.

I've seen a bunch of red Scuds but no yellow Challenges. I'm always amazed at how inconsistent things are, prime example is the V-day Daytona.
