Just got a new set of door pins from Mcann. mine has a little play of about 1/8th", when the door is fully open and if you lift from the end you can feel the play. I read somewhere that this pins can be very stubborn to remove, however I tried gently tap the pin just to see if it moves and it does. Is this just a straight forward job, push old pin out and push new pin in?
Or is this more difficult that it looks? Thanks.

Yes, that what he said, and make sure you support the door properly, or get a helper with a steady hand.

Speaking of those grease zirks, how much grease do you use on them and how often?

I just did this last month, and you cannot pay me to do it again. That is how bad it really is. Your mileage may vary, but my door had to come off, all the wirings came off, took days, drills, drifts, punch, hammers, die grinder, dremmel tool, and a whole bunch of bruises to get rid of 1 pin. Then I had to get a new hinge, cut it, redrill it, recounter sink it, and put the whole thing back. Stuffing all the wires in was fun ...

I won in the end over the SOB pin, but I would never take on that again.

If your pin moves, well maybe you are more lucky than most of us were.

Heat did not do it. What worked was drilling out the entire length of the pin with a 1/4 drill bit thereby weakening the pin to the point that it can then be pounded out with a combination of punch, drift, and an allen bolt (yes, a bolt).

    That's very unfortunate.

Part of the problem is that the tract that is supposed to pass the grease is smaller on some pins than others, and the hole to it is in the worst possible position, right at where the hinge-parts meet. IMO this is also the reason for the pins breaking frequently.

Ok, just an update, I tried replacing my door pins and I guess I was lucky cause the old pin came right out without any problem, I just have to support the door with my floor jack. There were lots of old grease from the old pin which explain the why it's not so stubborn to remove.
Both pins (driver side) R&R took me about 40min.

    1st pic = old pin
    2nd Pic = new pin

Are the Zirks a special size.....I could not get a gease gun fitting to go over the Zirk in my 86 328, to grease them. The grease gun fitting seemed to Small to slide over the zirk.

Is there more than one size....I thought they were all the same.

Mark, the Zirk is pretty much standard, I bought the smallest and compact grease gun I can find at my local auto parts store KRAGEN, for like $10 and you have to use the extension hose and transfer the grease gun head to the hose and use brass fittings to connect the hose to the grease gun, see pic. The cylinder of the grease gun is about 7" long and it's made by Powerbuilt

Got the exact same grease gun, fits perfectly, 1989 328. I don't think there are different sized fittings, try again?. Maybe fits but hole is clogged not letting grease in? Try a thin wire to unclog possibly.

I have a related question: someone mentioned to me that the door on my 308 didn't pivot as smoothly as he thought it should do. I didn't noticed this but could it be that I need to grease the pins?

Peter, it doesn't hurt to grease the pins, give it a try and see if it makes any difference.
