A couple of years ago Exoticar.com used to sell a full size Schumacher replica hemet, signed on the visor with non-functional radio jacks. Does anyone know if these are still available and where to get them?

    Thanks

Was it a Bell or a Schuberth? Bell would be old - up to 2000. I don't specifically recall the radio connector but there've been a bunch of replicas that even included a HANS device. Try the usual places - Morry, JMJ, couple of places in the UK.

There are quite a few differences between this helmet you are showing and a real one made for and/or used by MS. It is a nice replica though, but again, not one of the official replicas made by Bell and licensed by MS. I hope you weren't sold this as an original, or even a spare....

What is that, then? It has Bell logos.....

Do the replicas have the DOT/Snell ratings???

Well, a REAL helment, loaded with radio equipment is worth, what, $40,000.00????

Autoweek had a blurb where one Schumi wrecked had to be returned and tested and it was stolen.....the heat was on that cat, to bring it back!!

Well lets shine some light on this and maybe with your experience we can come up with a satisfactory conclusion as I am curious too.

I was told it was a real Bell K-1/same one MS used, painted by BELL, but not used/going to be used by Ferrari or MS as an actual race helmet. From what I remember the guy said it may (repeat, may) have been used for display/photo ops/tests with production cars on the factory track, etc., and he did say it came from someone within Ferrari.

Who knows really but it sounded good, I verified who the guy was who I purchased it off of, and the price was A-OK by me.

I believe the ones actually used by MS and Ferrari had additional/different markings below the Bell logo in the rear. Not sure what else is different about it as I have compared it to pictures of a race worn version and I can't see any.

Maybe you have some better pics of a 2000 MS helmet than I do. Feel free to post them up to compare. ;)

Also, it does have the radio hook ups under the functional flap.

Other than that it's a mystery.

I purchased it because it was rather special since it was as close to an actual used F1 race helmet as one could get without paying a small fortune to get it and it wasn't one of those replica helmets (that are not even real helmets and no Marlboro logos) that BELL was selling for +-$4,000.00.

I would like to pick up a MS signed visor for it if you have one from 2000 :)

Here it is in my den...

    Let's just say it's a nice replica.
It is certainly not an original, there are at least 3 visual differences and 4 internal ones that separate a custom helmet from a production line one. I would not feel comfortable discussing the exact details on a public forum such as this, as the forgeries keep getting better and I don't need to educate any unscrupulous individuals.

The Bell licensed replicas were absolutely 'real' helmets, the same Dominator or K1 as used by MS, ONLY they were filled with half the interior lining AND strapped down to the base so they could be sold as 'display replicas' and not 'usable helmets'. They did this to prevent clients from wearing them, and therefore protected themselves against any possible liability.

As most of you know, I have sold more original and replica MS helmets than anyone else...probably over 100 authentic/licensed replicas and over 40 originals over the years, so I really do know these things inside out. At present I have a few very rare licensed Schuberth RF1 replicas and several race used originals which start at $25k.....

As with all things in life, when it seems to good to be true, it usually is, and you do most often get what you pay for.

Most importantly, you are happy with this helmet and it looks great in your collection...enjoy!

    Thanks for your insight.

Feel free to PM the details in confidence as I would like to know the differences of what I have vs. an "original"

All I know its not an "original", not a replica, not some cheapy eBay fake, it's a real K1 with all the padding, etc.,and a story that may or may not be verifiable as I didn't witness it first hand.

and you're right...I am happy with it and thats all that really matters :)

Let me know if you have a signed visor for it.

Thanks Morry. I will let you know on the Visor. Thanks for the email.

I am now even more curious about my helmet. It's such an oddity. Its not an official replica, its not an original, it's not a cheapy fake, its a real K1 with everything but the modifications and numbering, it came from a very credible source with claims it came from the same place the originals came from, etc.

If anything its been entertaining to me. That makes the $19.95+ shipping and handling I paid for it that much more of a deal for me. haha. (kidding) :)

Also, I found some great pictures of a few race worn 2000 helmets for sale and I can see the subtle (and somewhat easily duplicated...aka the reasons why Morry doesn't want to discuss in an open forum) differences with them vs. mine.

Morry, have you even seen a version like mine before?

Yes I have. Because of the rarity and price of MS originals I have seen some fantastic knock-offs - some even 'numbered' by the Bell factory. Most find their way on ebay with a ludicrous story to boot. Caveat emptor

I figured. It seems there is a lot of that with racing memorabilia.

I am still going to investigate the guy I purchased this from.

I just don't see him as someone who misrepresents himself with false claims considering the business he is in. Been fooled before though and I am sure you have seen this 100 over. ;)

    Also sending you a PM...
