    Hey,

As I'm sure most of you know, Carol & John went to the final F1 test last week in Spain - We had our own "eyes & ears" at the circuit, which I thought was pretty cool.

Carol shot some pix with the phone which are certainly not comparable to what our buddy Natural posts, but gave another perspective from around the track, which again I thought was cool.

This got me thinking..... The 3GS (and I believe the 3G with an app download) will also shoot video - Probably much the same "issues" as with the camera, but may be worth a try - The audio track at least may be interesting.

Which led me to thinking the voice recorder app may also be worth playing with - Capturing audio from within an "empty" covered grandstand might produce some awesome audio [I still remember the main straight at Indy on Friday - No one there and the sound from "inside" that grandstand echoed around in fine fashion.

We've got the "F1 live timing" app which I haven't tried but seems to get rave reviews.

Anyone got any other ideas? [Of course this doesn't need to be iPhone only, it's just that's the one I know.]

    Cheers,
    Ian

Ian, thanks for starting this thread. I use the iPhone extensively at the sporty car races we attend for live timing - when you have 4 classes running together it really helps after a few laps when the P1's have lapped the GT2. I usually keep FChat on a page and the timing site on another - in the US live timing is on www.imsaracing.net - LMS races it's www.lemans-series.com. There have been times when there F1 and sporty cars on the same day so another page is for F1 live timing, which this year should be far easier on www.autosport.com than on the F1 website live timing where you have to enter email address/password. I'll play with the video feature on one of the phones at Sebring in a couple weeks. FYI, we have Mophie packs on both iphones which really helps!

Are you talking about the Voice Memo app that comes on the phone or something else that you download from the app store? I can play with that too if you tell me more...

The frustrating part with the iphone is not being able to get close up shots with it from a distance (or I haven't figured it out yet....in which case....HELP please).

I'm looking forward to the ipad with 3g to take to races and see just how that will work despite it being bigger than the iphone. The battery life potential sounds great.

    Thanks,
    Carol

Just the "standard" voice memo app - Fire it up and it displays a "VU meter" - As long as that's not spending all it's time in the red I reckon you could get a nice audio track - Now, I don't know exactly what "we" would do with it.....

Indeed. The Apple haters seem to take great pleasure in noting that it doesn't have a zoom lens. But, I at least enjoyed your pix from Spain as they gave a nice overview. As I said in the testing thread, we're fortunate in having "Natural" in the pits etc for the pro view....

Incidentally, I didn't realize that iPhone pix are "geotagged" - I just downloaded Google's Picasa app, and your pix (among others) included a "location" icon - I can see exactly where on the circuit you were!

I'm eagerly awaiting your "report" on this sucker! Apple's claims on battery life tend to be a little "optimistic", but at least this thing is big enough to hold a hopefully decent battery - We'll find out soon. I also reckon the F1 timing app will be really cool on that nice big display.

    Cheers,
    Ian
