    Hi all,

Quick question on the relay board:

I'm trying to track down a separate electrical issue, and discovered that the relay on my 1980 GTBi for the power windows is energized whenever the key is on. The windows work fine, but I'm wondering if it's supposed to have the opposite type of gate in the relay, as it doesn't make much sense to me to have to have current flowing through it continuously.

The relay that's in there right now is Bosch 0 332 014 113, a 5-prong unit. Is that the correct one?

It also just so happens that the horn relay (next to it) is missing. I'm wondering if back when the windows were slow, if someone may have taken the horn relay and put it in the window relay's spot.

    Cliff's notes:

    1) What is the correct number relay for the windows?

    and

    2) Should it be live whenever the key is on?

    Thanks,

    Tony :)

Bosch relay number is correct for both horn and windows (and numerous others). The window relay IS energized with key on...because of this, it will be warm when driving.

You could change it so windows were active even with ignition key off but that would be contrary to other cars where the idea is to prevent children from playing with the windows when left alone in the car.

Relay numbers vs function - all have coils on 30 & 85
BOSCH 0 332 014 113 NO or SPST Normally open contact (87) and (87) paralleled. Replacements may not have (or need) the paralleled contact.
    BOSCH 0 332 204 101 SPDT Open (87) and Closed (87a) contacts
    BOSCH 0 332 015 006 SPST but extra set of Normally Open contacts. 87 & 87b

I'm surprises you aren't complaining about horn function unless what you think is horn is the 'brake failure' relay or 'seat belt relay' which, if bad or missing, oft goes unnoticed.

Pictures below taken from 1980 gtbi/gtsi Owner's manual (195-80). Having that car myself, locations don't look just right but I can't put my fingers on it.
(EDIT) Went to the 1981 Owners Manual (216-81) for 3rd or bottom location (page 101) but my page 102 for the relay descriptions is missing. But my 1980 car is more like the 1981 locations. Perhaps someone can help with page 102.
(EDIT) Very bottom is locator from my 1983 from the drawing package but doesn't show the seat belt relay. Did Ferrari ever make 2 cars alike?

    Hi Paul,

Thank you for the clear and helpful information. I feel better, glad that's one fewer thing to deal with on the car! :)

Regarding the horn, when I bought the car a couple of years ago, the horn didn't work, and because the car had a later (aftermarket) Nardi flat-bottomed steering wheel on an extended hub when I bought it, I figured the horn just wasn't hooked up. Soon after purchasing the car, I re-covered the original steering wheel and returned it to its proper place on the car, in place of the Nardi wheel and extender. . . . and then the horn still wouldn't work. . . . . and I never got around to it, because I never use it.

But obviously the horn should be working in case of emergency! So yesterday I temporarily swapped the window relay over to the horn position, pushed the button, and . . . the compressor spun but it didn't go toot! Just made the whirring noise of a motor turning. Will have to look into that now . . . .

By the way, my relay board looks like the second (below) one that you posted. Mine's a 1980 GTBi, built July 1980.

    Thanks again,

    Tony

I was afraid the additional material might only fuzz up your thinking.

We have sister cars, I'm s/n 33963 1980 gtbi. Couldn't find my owner's manual last night.
The second panel is the same as mine.

And hows the odds on the one page you need from the pdf file being missing?

I found room for the relay locator on the 1983qv wiring drawing but I couldn't find room on the 1980 drawing (below). Perhaps I can move things around a bit. After this exercise I realize it's importance plus the differences year to year.

Re your horn...the plastic horns have a reed which creates the sound but if your compressor runs (requires periodic oiling) you may have a pressure leak on the hoses which become brittle with time.

Tony, if I was prepared I would not have made a total mess of this thread.

I thank you for your question as I pointed out a need and in doing so, successfully improved my drawings. The drawing below is now a part of the 1980 308 drawing.

    Thanks again, Paul.

My GTBi is #32957, built July 1980. Compared to later GTBis, it has the 1980-only stacked gauges, GTB badge on fuse cover, no power locks or mirrors, California mirror only on driver's door, and older style GTB headliner/interior lamp (i.e., no roof console). Original wheels are the 14" unmarked ones (Speedline?), but the spare is either a Campy or a Cromo (I don't remember).

I hadn't originally referenced my owner's manual because it was easier for me to just hop on here, and I never realized the manual to give relay numbers!

And so, now I find it really peculiar that they give relay numbers for all of them except the fuel pump?!? I don't recall the number on mine offhand, but it has something to the effect of 2x 15Amp on it . . . does this sound right?

    - T

P.S. -- now your diagram looks like what my car and OM have. (My OM is the one with the green cover.) :)
